For the first time on record, Americans are more likely to die of an accidental opioid overdose than in a motor vehicle crash, according to a new report from the National Safety Council.
The group calculates that the chance of dying from an opioid overdose has increased to 1 in 96, surpassing the odds of dying in a car accident, at 1 in 103. It's also greater than the odds of dying from a fall, a gun assault, pedestrian accident, or drowning.
"The opioid crisis remains an abstract issue for many people; they still believe it will not happen to them, or it isn't a risk facing them or their family," Maureen Vogel, spokeswoman for the National Safety Council, told CBS News. "These numbers show the gravity of the problem our country is facing. We need to reprioritize and regroup, because all these deaths are preventable."
Each day more than 130 Americans die after overdosing on opioids, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report finding the number of drug overdose deaths among middle-aged women skyrocketed between 1999 and 2017, with opioids, including fentanyl and heroin, being the main driver. Deaths from prescription and illicit opioids in children and teens also tripled over the same time period, according to a recent study published in JAMA Network Open.
Data reported last year showed drug overdoses killed more Americans in 2016 than the Vietnam War, with three-quarters of those deaths caused by opioids.

As long as that "pain dope" stays legal, and most of all, available in large quantities.
Ping
My chance of getting killed by an impaired driver is much higher than my dying of an opioid overdose!
More likely to die from a opioid OD than a car accident or, come on, we know you don’t want to say it but, no, well no, not “medical misadventure”(a BIGGIE!), come on, spit it out.....a firearm incident? Nah that can’t be cause we keep getting told that thousands die daily due to rogue firearms.
Build the Wall!
Building the wall will change everything.
More children are likely to be murdered than the top ten “likely to die.”
But, “we don’t need no steenkin’ wall”.
Same here, as my chances of dying of an opioid overdose are non-existent, as with anyone who doesn't take them.
Actually it’s good for all of the poor whites to die from overdoses. That’s one benefit for these commies to obstruct the building of the wall. You know it’s true. They really are quite evil.
The Communist Broadcasting System..
Is your argument with the data, or the source?
Which does prove fake lib hand-wringing over gun deaths is pure put-on, else they'd be wringing their hands just as much over opioid deaths, car wrecks and falls.
That’s crap. I have a 0 out of 7 billion (or absolute zero) chance of dying from an opioid overdose if I don’t take any.
“Americans more likely to die from opioid overdose than in a car accident”
not THIS American!
Though I’ve not researched it, I’m surely skeptical re CBS, and have little doubt the data’s been fudged to fit the ‘opiod crisis’ bandwagon, probably with an inherent funding motive.
It all depends on your lifestyle. I’ll bet the author has a non-zero chance of ODing.
Many have died in the hospital, or hospice, or home hospice.
Another person, one day, may administer a fatal dose knowingly or unknowingly.
Or you may find yourself with cancer, a burst disc or some sort of neurological pain and take too many your own self.
That’s how many get hooked and end up seeking street drugs.
Any opioid will do.
“The report notes that the odds calculated are statistical averages over the whole U.S. population and do not necessarily reflect the chances of death for a particular person. A person’s individual risk of dying from various causes is, of course, affected by factors such as where they live and drive, the activities in which they participate, and the kind of work they do.”
Don’t take it personal. Just stats on all Americans.
FWIW, I literally had to do CPR on my own daughter after her knee surgery...because...they about OD’d her fentanyl. The medical community has lost their collect $hit prescribing these pain killers. Between my back and shoulder issues over the last 2 decades and all the pain meds I’ve taken, I’m surprised I’m not part of these stats.
