Hyman Arluck was born in February 1905 in Buffalo, NY. His father Sam was a celebrated cantor in Buffalo’s Jewish community. It was at the synagogue that Hy first started singing and developing his musical talents.

Hy loved to sing but was extremely shy. In the hope that he would become a music teacher, his mother bought a piano. Hy began studying at age 9, quickly outgrew the neighborhood piano teacher, and went on to study with the leading Buffalo teacher, who was also a conductor, organist and composer.

Like most piano students, Hy didn’t like to practice. Though he liked the classical pieces that he studied, he was much more interested in the ragtime music that was all the rage. Hy was 12 when he wrote his first piano piece, a ragtime number titled “Indianola.” He began to collect jazz records, which sounded strange coming from a wind-up Victrola accustomed to playing what his father liked, traditional Hebrew melodies, klezmer and Italian opera. Desperate to hear more jazz, whenever a new band came to Buffalo, Hy was in the audience.

Before long, Hy was playing piano in different bands around town, taking jobs as a pianist in various (silent) movie houses and for a vaudeville troupe. His show business experience led to the formation of the Snappy Trio. There was 15 year old Hy Arluck on stage singing, playing piano and writing arrangements. Even though the members of the trio were all teenagers, they had no trouble getting work in Buffalo’s speakeasies and bordellos. (Ah, those were the days!)

The money poured in. Hy loved that his work enabled him to purchase sporty new clothes and a Model T Ford, which was the first and only one in his neighborhood. At 16, Hy was much more interested in pursuing a musical career than education and decided to drop out of high school. Not surprisingly, his parents objected strongly. In order to pacify them, he halfheartedly attended a vocational school where he studied subjects such as astronomy and woodworking, which were less challenging and time consuming than math and Latin.

The Snappy Trio added two more boys and became the Southbound Shufflers. The new band performed on a lake boat during the summer of 1923 and then at Lake Shore Manor during the summer of 1924. That was when Hyman Arluck took his first crack at song writing by collaborating with friend Hyman Cheiffetz to write this little ditty. For the sheet music, he changed his first name from Hyman to Harold.

This recording is a time capsule into 1920s dance band music, the early days of jazz.
