Some Transportation Security Administration employees are quitting their jobs as the partial government shutdown continues through its third week, leaving more than 800,000 federal employees without a paycheck.
The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union of federal employees, representing about 44,000 TSA workers, says some TSA employees have resigned, and others are considering quitting after working one of the busiest air travel periods of the year without pay.
Every day Im getting calls from my members about their extreme financial hardship and need for a paycheck, said Hydrick Thomas, the unions TSA Council president, in a statement. Some of them have already quit and many are considering quitting the federal workforce because of the shutdown.
Its unclear exactly how many TSA employees have left their jobs since the partial shutdown began on Dec. 22. But a number of workers have described the financial burden the shutdown has thrust upon them as many depend on each paycheck to make ends meet. TSA employees are some of the lowest paid federal workers, and, in interviews with MONEY last week, current employees said they are delaying car and insurance payments, and worried about paying rent and childcare during this shutdown. Employees also said morale among co-workers has hit a new low.
As far as were concerned, a lot of us still live paycheck to paycheck, Victor Payes, a TSA officer based in Los Angeles who represents his colleagues in the union, told MONEY last week. Its hard to plan a budget for these types of crises for any extended period of time.

Oh no, not the Big Blue Shirts?! How will we manage?!
if they’re in-between pay cycles (which they are until tomorrow) how on earth is anyone experiencing ‘extreme financial hardship’?
shouldn’t they hold that tear-jerker for another week at least?
and perhaps the union could tell us how many of those who are quitting found jobs with better hours closer to home in a now-bustling job market?
This is a joke. They haven’t even missed a paycheck yet. It will be more costly for them to quit and have unpaid time off to find work.
Seriously, when has there ever been the slightest movement of federal employees leaving their jobs. Never happens. Not now either.
Who will miss them?
TSA = Thousands Standing Around
Union says. Word is going out make travelers lives as miserable as possible.
Exactly how many?
Five?
Bummer! We are screwed. How are we ever going to manage without these people?
Now we are going to have to send people to university for four years to train them on how to legally grope little girls and old ladies, and on how to be rude and arrogant.
My bank has a huge banner on their website with a toll-free number to call if you are affected by the government shutdown. They stated that they will work with their customers who are affected. I dont see an issue.
Without the TSA, who are they gonna get to feel up 13-year old girls?
Yes, well paid, full benefits for a low skill job, but they are running away in droves when they havent even missed a check yet...
Please
Have they found new employment where they get to ransack and loot travelers luggage?
Now, after all the BS is over, Trump should just reallocate the security function back to the private sector and get the gov out of one more sensitive area.
I do believe that when there is no good reason for the government to absorb a function which the private sector can do as well or better, then the gov should get out of the way. That is the conservative view point, not personal attacks.
Too funny - today is the first check being missed yet so many have suffered terribly so far.....
I’m honored.
One of the only beefs I have with PT is that he didn’t abolish the tsa.
Agreed!
