I don’t have any joy in my conclusions but won’t share the rose-colored glasses that so many here see things through. It is undeniable that our victory was by a hair’s breath. Wisconsin has already gone back to the Demons, Michigan and Pennsylvania will soon follow.

Yeah, you are right about the dumbing down and apathy of the people.
But typically the party in the White House loses seats in midterms oh, so it’s not totally unexpected. Especially with a Republican party that didn’t back Trump and actually worked against him. I don’t know if the losses were so much that people wanted the Democrats or that conservatives didn’t vote for wishy-washy Republicans. I believe I read that most Republican candidates that backed Trump won.

The real takeaway from this poll is that an astonishing 88% of voters agree with President Trump that our southern border is a problem, vs. only 12% who agree with the Democrat leaders that it’s not.
The Left uses this parsing approach to set up a straw man arguments - they exaggerate the rhetoric to a level that fewer will agree with.
In this case, they jump on the word “crisis” rather than “problem”, knowing fewer people will agree with that characterization.
With gun control, they jump on the term “assault weapon”, knowing fewer people see the need to own an “assault weapon”. With illegal aliens, they jump on the term “immigrants”, knowing most people support legal immigration.
Often, conservatives walk right into this trap by heightening the rhetoric - i.e., if we had been satisfied to call it a “problem” rather than a “crisis”, then the Left would not have been able to divide us into those who see it as a problem vs. those who see it as a crisis.
President Trump understands this dynamic well, which I believe explains why he often chooses to soft pedal some of his issues.
For example, it has been frustrating to see him let the deep state run wild, and his apparent passivity regarding locking up the Clintons and Obama co-conspirators. But I think he knows that the more extreme a position he takes, the narrower his support becomes - it’s just a fact of politics, and the Left will jump on any opportunity to find divisions and peel off his support.
Let’s say 50% of voters would support Trump calling HRC “Crooked Hillary”. Of the 50%, how many would support her being named as an unindicted coconspirator, or her being indicted for perjury, etc., but with no fine or jail time? Say 35%? How many would support her doing some actual jail time? I’m guessing you are now down to below 15%. How many would support her being hanged for treason? .01% ?
These numbers are just my wild guesses, but you get my point that the more extreme the position, the narrower the political support.
I think Trump is smart to occasionally ramp up the rhetoric to appeal to his base - but sometimes using a word like “crisis” can backfire when the Left can use it to divide his support.

They should normalized these numbers (multiply by 100/91) to 46, 41, and 13.

You don’t believe there is a crisis at the border right now? I am wondering why you were referring to Trump using a word like crisis as if it were wrong...backfiring? Well no matter what he said they would leap all over it, that is what they do. If he had said there were some issues with the border that need addressed they would be doing the same theatrical game they are doing now.

I DO think it’s a crisis. I am definately among the 42% that considers it a crisis. I am also among the 88% that believes it’s a problem.
So the point I was trying to make is that if we use the word “problem”, we get to claim a stunning 88% voter support for our position. Sometimes it’s more effective to use the broader description and claim a more powerful coalition, that’s all I was saying.

No, that wasn’t my point - I think Trump’s instincts are spot on - and they rarely backfire. I was saying that when you see Trump soft pedaling an issue, like locking Hillary up, (which he no longer talks about) the reason might be that he’s building a broader coalition...

Yes, that was exactly the point I was trying to make.
If he termed it a problem the polls would have just changed it anyway to get the results they want. There really is no winning that game.
If he does have plans to declare an emergency to get it done, I think he has to use strong words to describe the situation. What I have found in talking to people is a lot of people don’t know what or who to believe. Many are confused about what is true. I had a woman tell me today if things are so bad on the border why have those of us living there not said anything until now? I have been trying to tell everyone that would listen about the border issues since President Carter opened the border in the 70s. I have made calls, written letters, later emails for decades. I have neighbors that testified to Congress about the border issues decades ago. I began posting online about the issues in the 90s when I got a computer. Have been posting here about them since I signed up here. To think that someone believes we have not said a thing?
I do not know how to reach some people who act like they are suddenly horrified at what they are hearing from both sides. Today a man said he had never heard of Rob Krentz, the rancher that was murdered in Arizona. That story was indeed out there, still is and his neighbors continue to make videos and work on the border issues constantly.
I have to wonder if people are hiding under rocks? Even the MSM has carried at least some of the stories over the years and people say it is news to them? Many say there was never an issue and now we are just brainwashed by Trump. I try so hard to be optimistic about this country but it is getting harder and harder.
I expect the left to spew about Trump, but people who really aren’t very political, don’t keep informed, usually don’t bother to vote...there are a lot of them out there and they seem to have no idea what is going on. Worse they only care because of the uproar, they still plan to do nothing either way.
Very frustrating.
