A Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office homicide detective who has played a leading role in the case against parking-lot shooter Michael Drejka was arrested and fired after he showed up drunk to a death investigation scene, deputies said.

George D. Moffett Jr., 48, was off-duty before he responded about 10:30 p.m. Thursday from his home in Riverview to a fatal shooting at 10610 Gandy Boulevard in St. Petersburg, according to the Sheriff’s Office. After he got out of his unmarked agency car, deputies noticed he smelled like alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and was slurring his speech, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Quite obvious, he doesn’t live in the same county that he worked in, until he was fired.

...

So he got drunk while he was on call.

Most places require you to be a resident, if you are police, fire or EMT - familiarity with streets and neighborhood. Not likely if you live in a different county.

That said, Pinellas County is as liberal as they come.

According to the article, this department doesn’t maintain an on call schedule. If they need a detective after hours, they issue a request, which they can decline if they are not able to respond. I assume that historically, there is usually a detective looking for some overtime, so it probably works out.

This bozo, who was off duty, decided to respond after having a few. He should have simply let them know he’d had a couple and couldn’t drive. Maybe his boss would be annoyed, maybe not, but he would still have a job and not be facing a DUI charge.

He just handed every defense attorney, in every case pending trial or under appeal, a present with a big red bow.

Thanks for the info. That’s worse than being drunk on call. He had a choice not to go.

sounds to me like he’s an arrogant ahole. He overroad the sheriff to get his 15 minutes of fame and now look at him

Lots of jurisdictions have had to modify that requirement to find recruits who are eligible to serve., and that has been for quite sometime as well.

Aren’t they on call 24/7 though? Does that job preclude ever drinking?
