Way back like 15 years ago the government asked industry for proposals of an advanced border security system. My company bid, I was one of the technical leaders. We proposed mobile and fixed sensor towers all over the border, ground sensors in lesser traveled areas some fencing, and lots of advanced software that we demonstrated could detect trespassers from video, radars, or the ground sensors and figure out if they were animals or people. It was all really very clever.

The government instead chose a competitor that offered a bunch of iridium phones right away and promised to build a bunch of cell phone towers years later, which of course never got built. So the border patrol already got "better cell service" back when George W Bush was the one trying to make sure that nobody did anything meaningful about the border. If they don't want the fancy high tech virtual wall like we offered, a good old fashioned physical wall will do just fine. Get it done.

With a virtual “wall” peeps in remote areas would have to be interdicted in Mexico well before they got to the border.
