Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is recovering after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone suffered in a cycling accident.

A department spokeswoman says DeVos is resting at home after the Thursday surgery. She is expected to recover fully. The spokeswoman did not immediately answer questions about the accident or the nature of DeVos’ injury.

A lot of politicians are having bicycling accidents lately! (DeVos, Evil San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, John Kerry a few years ago, etc.)

Biking is a great exercise, but be careful out there! (I'm sticking to an indoor cycling setup until the summer.)

I bet it was a wrist bone. There’s one in the wrist that won’t heal on its own without some surgical help. Others may need surgery if displaced and they can’t get it back in position.

It’s natural to put your hand out to catch yourself then break a wrist bone in the process. Sometimes a doctor can tell what happened just by the type of break it is.

You can't always do it, but better to learn to put the arms around the head and roll than put out the hand in a futile attempt to cushion the blow.

I'm working to make sure I lose weight, build up my upper body muscle strength and increase my flexibility before I go riding outside. All those can keep accidents from happening in the first place, and lessen the injuries when accidents happen.

Prayers for a rapid healing for her. This good woman gave up a lot to help fix our schools and she has been treated horribly.

Best wishes for a full recovery with no complications. A fall can be catastrophic at Ms. DeVos’s age.

Probably right and it hurts like hell too.

It’s a natural instinct to try to break the fall. Doesn’t work of course.
This is why professional bicycle racers do tumbling exercises during the off season. If you’re going down, gravity will inevitably win. Tumbling exercises conditions the person to tuck and roll instead. Worked for me once in a mountain bike race and twice at the velodrome.

The great talk show host Howie Carr from wrko in Boston recently hurt his elbow while cycling and trying to retrieve a wayward nickel on the ground at the same time.

I wish she was making news for other reasons like blowing up the education system in this country which is one of the biggest reasons were in the mess we’re in.

There’s one in the wrist that won’t heal on its own without some surgical help.

I'll vouch for that. Broke mine so badly in August that the forearm came over my wrist. Took two titanium "T's" and 12 screws to put my wrist back to where it was supposed to be and back together. Still in physical therapy to get some of the range of motion back and it looks like I'm going to permanently lose some motion of my right thumb the injury and breaks were so bad.

It's been a rough summer here. Broke a vertebrae, then fractured my tailbone, then my wrist. All one right after another, all three separate falls. Sucks getting older.

And, conservative radio talk show host, Howie Carr, also, recently, broke his arm from a bike accident. How many more?

I ride a recumbent so there’s always the possible I may fall asleep from being too comfortable and tip over. Many women her age are really strong riders, so I hope she is able to heal up soon and get back on the bike.

“You can’t always do it, but better to learn to put the arms around the head and roll than put out the hand in a futile attempt to cushion the blow.”

LOL. A few months ago, I was outside on a steep driveway and didn’t tie my boot laces. Sure enough, they got tangled together and I was going down, whether I wanted to or not. But I’ve watched enough action movies to do EXACTLY as you said, so I pull in my arm, collapsed my knees, and landed on my shoulder. I then rolled a couple of revs down the driveway, but wound up with only a tiny bruise on my back and a minor scrape on my hand, that was it. My sister-in-law looked at me when I was rolling and was like, WTF are doing. I was just thrilled to get up, shake myself off a bit, and get back to work on her car...and laugh about it!

I’ve had a few low back surgeries that weren’t fully successful. The first one left my left ankle super weak but after some years I was able to gain some strength back as the nerve regrew. The second surgery did the same thing to my right ankle but I don’t think I’ll be getting it back like the left one. I’ve fallen a few times but luckily I was able to remember to twist and fall on my upper arms rather than try to catch myself. More embarrassment than anything.

Back in the 80’s I was riding a motorcycle that went out from under me on a sweeping curve. I was fine rolling along until I got the bright idea to put my arms and hands out to stop my roll. That’s when the road rash got me. Live and learn I guess. Never did see anything on the road to cause the tires to slip out. No gravel, oil, or water. The bike was fine so I picked it up and rode on.

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, Secretary DeVos.
Get back on the bicycle as soon as you can.
