Currently, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact has 172 votes. If they reach 270 —then republicans will be locked out of power forever and the USA will die.
The terrible tragedy is that they are getting the popular votes via illegals. Most conservatives who pay attention have seen the stats in California that show gross discrepancies between the numbers of citizens and the numbers of illegals in places like Los Angeles County. Nor is this a fringe issue. The national review writes about the discrepancies.

Investors business daily has written that the US has 3.5 million more voters than citizens.

That represents a number that is slightly more than the popular majority that Hillary won.
The threat of illegals to the future of the USA is existential. Once empowered the democrats will be able to remain in power because they will have an unlimited supply of illegals to keep them there. Especially with promises of government support the instant they cross over the border. already almost 70 percent of illegals are getting some form of government support.
What’s even more maddening is that Mexican Americans think this system benefits them. The benefits are transient. Mexico is getting richer. Until president Trump the growth rates for Mexico were greater than the USA. Future waves of illegals will not be from Mexico. Nor will it matter to democrats that future waves of illegals are not from Mexico. What matters is the illegals voting democrat.
You state absolute fact. If the Electoral College is eliminated all the next Communist Presidents will be elected by non-citizens loyal to other countries. The UN will be giggling themselves to no end over this prospect. It will indeed be the end of our nation sovereignty as we know it.
This concept is VERY dangerous and needs to be exposed right away.
"Article I, Section 10, Clause 3: No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State [emphases added], or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay."
