IN RE: ROMNEY
Powerline ^ | January 2,2019 | STEVEN HAYWARD

It is not that all of the president’s policies have been misguided. He was right to align U.S. corporate taxes with those of global competitors, to strip out excessive regulations, to crack down on China’s unfair trade practices, to reform criminal justice and to appoint conservative judges. These are policies mainstream Republicans have promoted for years.

I boldfaced “promoted” because Romney has unwittingly provided the devastating argument against his style of Republicanism. Yes, it is quite true that nearly all Republican presidential candidates—and presidents—have promoted tax reform, lower regulation, getting tough with China, and appointing better judges (and add in moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem), if by “promoted” you mean giving lip service to the ideas.

None of them have delivered on these “promoted” ideas (Reagan excepted, of course). The two presidents Bush botched judicial appointments, extended regulation, delivered little in the way of serious tax or spending reform, and did nothing serious with regard to China. I wish Romney had defeated Obama in 2012, but does anyone think this Massachusetts technocrat, who gave us the state-level version of Obamacare in the Bay State,

signed up for a regional climate change cap-and-trade scheme, who appointed the egregious Gina McCarthy (Obama’s second EPA administrator) to be his environmental adviser, and appointed state judges who struck the first judicial blows for same-sex marriage, would have governed as a serious conservative had he won?

I can’t bother to read Romney’s whole article, but my take is he praised many of Trump’s cabinet picks, didn’t attack specific policies, and made vague complaints about “character”. Meanwhile, he showed poor character by attacking the GOP leader in .... the friggin Washington Post?

Give it a few weeks and he’ll be claiming that his own op-ed was taken out of context. LOL.

Moral guidance from Romney of Bain is a topic for a comedy skit, not for serious discussion.

In effect, Mitt Romney is trashing President Trump for pushing through what is essentially the 2012 Republican policy platform and actually pushing through and fulfilling most of Mitt Romney’s major campaign promises.

In the great tradition John F Kerry, Mitt Romney was for Trump before he was against him

Mitt Romney is a disingenuous POS

This short article sums up my feelings exactly. Trump actually does what Bush and the “mainstream Republicans” like Romney paid lip service to. Boehner and Ryan talked a good game about getting rid of Obamacare and stopping Obama’s Socialist program, but then couldn’t or didn’t stop it and simply complained that there was only so much that they could do. Bush II talked a good game on cutting spending and regulations for a while, but in retrospect, it is 100% clear that he couldn’t care less about shrinking government. He was a Big Government Republican. I wish Trump would do somethings different and tone down his rhetoric sometimes too. But I’m pleasantly surprised at just how conservatively he has governed and have completely lost respect for these Republicans who seem to think that Trump’s “tone” is more important than what he actually has done.

The Romney article first made me think he's positioning himself for a 2020 primary challenge, but even he must realize he'd be squashed like a bug. Another alternative is that he's posturing for ownership of the non-existent "moderate" vote out there, but that makes zero sense.

Actually, nothing about Romney's article makes much sense, just as nothing about the man himself makes much sense. He's the answer to a question no one in America is asking.

Sorry, perhaps lumping you guys in with likes of Romney was a bit extreme and unfair.

No insult intended

"moderate" vote

Sounds like taking the middle position between a tanker and a cruiser in an underway refueling. At best you are all wet and if things go wrong you get squashed between an irresistible force and an immovable object.

From the article:

“I boldfaced “promoted” because Romney has unwittingly provided the devastating argument against his style of Republicanism.

The point is, Trump has proved that “mainstream Republicanism” was a colossal failure. Whereas Bush-Romney Republicans “promoted” good ideas, Trump has delivered on them.”

I thought the exact same thing when I first saw the WAPO op-ed that Romney signed his name to. I doubt Romney actually wrote it.

The simple point is that none of these programs that Romney and the RINOs bragged about being in favor of would never have passed were it not for President Trump.

Romney will never be president and will be a one-term senator, elected mainly for savings the 2002 Winter Olympics and a famous name.
