China reserves the right to use force to bring Taiwan under its control but will strive to achieve peaceful reunification with the self-ruled island that has a bright future under any future Chinese rule, President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday.
Taiwan is Chinas most sensitive issue and is claimed by Beijing as its sacred territory. Xi has stepped up pressure on the democratic island since Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party became president in 2016.
Tsai rejected Xis call and instead urged China to embrace democracy.
Xi has set great personal store in resolving what the Communist Party calls the Taiwan issue, holding a landmark meeting with then Taiwan president Ma Ying-jeou in Singapore in late 2015, just before Tsai was elected.
Xi spoke at Beijings Great Hall of the People on the 40th anniversary of a landmark Taiwan policy statement.
He said reunification must come under a one-China principle that accepts Taiwan as part of China, anathema to supporters of Taiwan independence, adding that the one country, two systems model of autonomy, with which China governs Hong Kong, was the best way for Taiwan.

Id love to have us recognize Taiwan as a separate country. In all ways.
Taiwan needs MODERN subs.
And fighter aircraft.
they would be copied by China in 2 weeks
If China copies nukes, who cares? Nukes hiding in a sub somewhere are great retaliatory weapons. China does not want a nuclear attack on them killing a billion people.
It’s not like Taiwan hasn’t been preparing for the last 70 years.
Hey! Like, don’t put our sailors and pilots in harm’s way for nothing, maaaaan. Bring them all home. We’re not the world police, doooooooood. China’s our friend, just like Russia, Iran, Venezuela, North Korea and all. We should be living here in libertarian euphoria, peace and harmony. No one is attacking us. Don’t worry ‘bout tomorrow. Live for today!
[See how weak we are? Come and get some, Xi and Putin. It’s now or never.]
China does not want a nuclear attack on them killing a billion people.
Its unlikely an attack by Taiwan would kill that many, but even if it did, it would leave China with a population twice that of the US.
How many troops does China have in Syria?
It’s not about the US willingness to oppose existential threats, it’s all about prioritization. We need more reserves in the US so that we are in a position to respond and deploy against emerging threats.
China is the biggest US existential threat at this time. The Southern border is a close second.
China does not want a nuclear attack on them killing a billion people.
Used to be that if we killed 250.000,000 of them and they killed 250,000,000 of us they’d win ... or so Mao told Nixon. Doubt if that metric has changed - just the numbers are different.
Besides, China has some 350 nukes and has just launched its ‘boomer’ class of icbm toting subs.

A lot - mostly hunting Uigurs.
Good timing to get our forces out of (and moving out of) the Middle East. Let our ‘friends’ take care of their own business...they can handle it for now.
China may need a major slap-down. I hope that President Trump’s economic one will suffice, but I am not optimistic that it alone will be enough.
That country is a MAJOR budding threat to a whole lot of our interests in the Pacific.
Imagine what our population would be today if we hadn’t killed off all the babies and women were still desiring children!
Like Tawain’s going to buckle under Communist China....that’s a not. The Tiwanese people are prepared to fend off any attack by China until we get there...and they know it will cost life for them to do that....
lets pray so
It is not how many get killed/maimed/get cancer....
It is the incredible devastation of infra-structure and creation of horrible chaos, which is the real deterrent for nations starting nuclear wars.
Iran seems enamored with the notion.
Iran is being run by religious extremist Ayatollahs so do not expect any rational moves. Until Iran changes into a legit democracy, all bets are off.
