Washington bans anyone under 21 from buying assault rifles

Washington on Tuesday joined a handful of other states that ban anyone under 21 from buying a semi-automatic assault rifle after voters passed a sweeping firearms measure in November that has drawn a court challenge from gun-rights advocates.

The ballot initiative seeks to curb gun violence by toughening background checks for people buying assault rifles, increasing the age limit to buy those firearms and requiring the safe storage of all guns. Only the age-limit portion of the measure goes into effect on Jan. 1; the rest becomes law on July 1.

Kristen Ellingboe, a spokeswoman for the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility, said the initiative was one of the most comprehensive gun-violence prevention measures to pass in the United States. It specifically targeted “semi-automatic assault rifles” in response to mass shootings across the country, she said.

“We’ve seen that assault rifles are the weapon of choice for mass shootings, and when they’re used, more people are killed and injured,” Ellingboe said.

Fifty-nine percent of Washington voters approved Initiative 1639 in the Nov. 6 general election. […]

Opponents have sued to block it.

“Starting today, young adults between the ages of 18 to 20 will have their rights to purchase semi-automatic rifles stripped away,” said Dave Workman, a spokesman for the Bellevue, Washington-based Second Amendment Foundation. …

So, because some dems pass a law, everyone is supposed to comply and obey?

Screw them. Buy them and sell them off paper anyway. And 30 round mags as well.

Well there’s not a single criminal out there that’s going to comply no matter what their age.

I wonder if someone under 21 could go to Idaho and buy an AR-15? If I were a gang banger, a machine gun for a bag of H would be as close as a dealer’s trunk.

Well, at least they’ve figured out that it’s the “young skulls full of mush” Davy Hogg’s age who are doing all of the shooting and killing.

I wouldn’t have a problem with this if they made 21 the mythical age for everything (buying booze, drinking, smokes, voting, getting loans/credit cards, etc).

All that happens is that some doped-up 19-year old will go and buy a Walther PPK, and kill a dozen people with it...accomplishing the same thing as a nutcase with an assault rifle. This idea that you can resolve ‘all problems’ is an impossible task and just makes the agenda look like a project by 5th grade kids.

The ban includes semi-automatic .22 rifles, also.

There are also new laws about gun safes and potential criminal penalties for shootings caused by unlawful gun storage.

The Initiative also created new standards for justifiable Police shootings.

Bottom Line - All Washington state criminals are now completely aware that most Police are not going to risk firing their guns for any reason.

I turned 19 and 20 in Vietnam. I did my year and a short extension and celebrated two birthdays there.

So these assholes think you are old enough to pack a fully automatic M-16/M-4 at 18 and 19 but don’t trust you with a semi automatic modern sporting rifle.

Stupid must be ingrained in every liberal.

So how is “assault rifle” defined? We all know that they are primarily targeting the AR-15 yet it has never been used in combat so it cannot possibly be called an assault rifle.

semi-automatic assault rifle

That's far enough -- writer disqualified. By definition assault rifles are fully automatic.

The more accurate definition of what the libs are targeting is "scary-looking rifles like they use in action movies".

“The Initiative also created new standards for justifiable Police shootings.”

I believe that was a separate referendum - but it did pass.

The gun law as you said, includes banning sales of .22 semi-autos like the tube-fed Marlins to under 21 year olds.

By the way - anyone 18 years or older can't shoot a gun owned by another person. This includes a son can't shoot his dad's gun. (That referendum was passed a couple of years ago). Of course nobody follows it, but technically, that limits the adult child (19-20 years old) to a bolt-action or single shot rifle for hunting.

The new law has 30 pages in it.

In order for ANYBODY to buy a gun it requires that they have taken a gun safety course within the last five years of purchase. So - you are 50 years old and owned guns for 30 years - you need to take the class. And again at 60 if you want to buy another gun.

The law did not describe what such a course would look like. 4 hours for $50? Or two days at $400??

How many assault weapons (real ones, or even AK 47’s) have been used in crimes in Washington State, esp. mass murders?

Do I hear crickets or what?

As far as I know, no one can buy an “assault rifle” without a BATF tax stamp. An “assault rifle” has a selector switch with full Auto setting.

If it’s like MASS, they use such deadly attributes are a flash suppressor and a bayonet lug.

You know, to prevent the banzai charges into the high schools.

How is that not like a poll tax? You have to spend money to exercise a right?

DC legislators,it would seem, enjoy having their work overturned by SCOTUS.For that matter,so do legislators in Massachusetts,as evidenced by the SCOTUS decision "Caetano v Massachusetts".

That one went 9-0 against Massachusetts.
