Belgium parliament unanimously vote to end Kosher and Halal slaughter methods to take effect beginning 1 January 2019 in the Flanders region and 1 August 2019 in Walloon.
The new rules were voted in Wallonia in May and the Flanders region in June 2017 and stipulates that animals must be stunned before being killed. This is forbidden in Judaism and Islam for the preparation of kosher and halal meat.
[snip]
How kosher and halal meat are produced has been an area of contention with animal rights activists as both Judaism and Islam believe that they can only eat meat from animals whose throats are cut whilst they are still conscious. As well, the animals when slaughtered should completely bleed out.
The regional government in Lower Austria was criticised earlier in the year for their plans to limit access to kosher and halal meat as believers would be required to register to buy meat from animals slaughtered according to the religious laws.
Religious slaughter methods are forbidden in Germany with some exceptions being allowed. In Austria approved slaughter houses in presence of a veterinarian are all that is allowed.
The restriction of Kosher and Halal methods is being debated in Poland, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Absolutely incorrect regarding kosher slaughter.
ok....thanks
“So my canned lentil soup is ok?”
Yes. In ancient times they said it was OK to eat food even if it had been offered in sacrifice in pagan temples to pagan gods, because those gods weren’t real, they were only images and statues. Big deal. They were nothing.
Only refrain if it offends someone who doesn’t “get it” and is still concerned about it being offered to an idol.
"...After affirming the humaneness of schechita [kosher slaughter] , Dr. Grandin takes issue with a new study in New Zealand that seemed to conclude that schechita causes pain to animals. Writes Dr. Grandin: I have observed that cattle held in an upright restraint device had almost no reaction to correctly done slaughter that was performed with a special long knife. She responds to those who advocate stunning the animals before schechita by saying that from her observations it appears that when good practices are used, the steer or lamb will stay still and not react to the cut.
In a bold response to a New Zealand study that concluded that slaughter without stunning causes pain, Dr. Grandin said that the knife in the study was shorter than those used in schechita, uncertainty whether the wound was kept open like in schechita , and the sharpening of the knives was done by a mechanical device rather than on a whetstone. It was studies like these that led to the banning of schechita in New Zealand."
I have noticed, after reading studies like that done in New Zealand, that the authors seemed to start out with the attitude that kosher slaughter was inhumane, even before they witnessed it properly done. This New Zealand study did NOT employ the exact methods used during kosher slaughter, as Dr. Grandin pointed out, and so any conclusions reached by the researchers that schechita was inhumane were NOT valid.
I was permanently scarred when a pet bull I had was slaughtered during war rationing years by a guy who first hit him in head with butt of ax.
I looked away, would not eat him, no matter how begged, or explained or wheedled, to the point my parents gave all the meat away.
There is no way to slaughter nicely.
A lot more than 5-7%, probably 15-20%. Belgium is basically in a race with Sweden to be the first country in Western Europe to transition to Islam. Most of the money is on Belgium because it’s not really a single country or culture, but instead was put together after WW2.
Banning of Kosher isn’t a problem, the remaining Jews will still fund the political parties that are flooding their country with the new arrivals - that’s just who they are.
Banning Halal is ANOTHER STORY and after a couple of subway lines in Brussels get blasted, the government there will likely reconsider the idea.
“FGM has been illegal in Belgium since 2001.”
Did they also ban the practice of taking the girls back to the “Old Country” to get it done, and with that, requiring Belgium doctors to report evidence of such.
If not, then their ban isn’t much more than symbolic.
There’s a halal butcher not too far from me.
On the occasions that I must drive by on the Harley, I crank up the stereo to drown out the screams of the goats.
Barbaric.
Slaughter is not nor possibly can be a pleasant experience although it is something you get used to.
With today’s slaughter methods though the process is relatively quick, painless for the animal and just about as humane as it could possibly be.
I’ve put 3 dogs to sleep and that wasn’t exactly much fun either. In either scenario suffering is virtually non existent.
Huh. That could be interpreted as “food having been offered to idols”, if you want to get technical. Wish I could get my last butt out to plant a really big garden this year, but the mosquitos drive me indoors most of the summer.
That’s interesting. I didn’t know CO2 was being used, at least in some places, instead of the traditional captive bolt. More humane, the better. I guess injecting an animal with propofol is out of the question though.
Well, at least you aren't asking for much.
Especially considering that the US doesn't have a national anti-FGM law.
Maybe the sadness is that something had to die so you could live. Sigh.
You’re creepin me out dude.
I worked in one in Abilene, Texas in 1975 for 2 weeks or so. They used a hand held pneumatic ram. I walked into a room in the rendering section and there hundreds (or so it seemed) of cow skulls with their eyes still in them. I was 15 or 16 (I lied about my age) and it seemed that they were just staring at me. I quit on the spot. I love steak to this day and I helped my grandfather slaughter hogs with no problem. But that got to me.
Frontpage Mag had an interesting article on it that answers your question. It’s worth reading in it’s entirety. https://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/199636/halal-taste-terror-enza-ferreri
“What the sticker says, though, is apparently taking place in the USA and Canada where Campbells Soup and other companies have paid the Hamas-linked Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) for their halal certification, in France, where it is claimed that 60% of halal food is controlled by organizations belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood and the so-called halal tax is the organization’s main source of funding. In the UK, major supermarket chain Morrisons is not only indirectly but even directly giving money to the Islamic National Zakat Foundation.”
I saw that movie. It did portray a misapplication of the tool.
The operator obviously ventured beyond the design parameters.
Bupkis.
