Belgium parliament unanimously vote to end Kosher and Halal slaughter methods to take effect beginning 1 January 2019 in the Flanders region and 1 August 2019 in Walloon.
The new rules were voted in Wallonia in May and the Flanders region in June 2017 and stipulates that animals must be stunned before being killed. This is forbidden in Judaism and Islam for the preparation of kosher and halal meat.

How kosher and halal meat are produced has been an area of contention with animal rights activists as both Judaism and Islam believe that they can only eat meat from animals whose throats are cut whilst they are still conscious. As well, the animals when slaughtered should completely bleed out.
The regional government in Lower Austria was criticised earlier in the year for their plans to limit access to kosher and halal meat as believers would be required to register to buy meat from animals slaughtered according to the religious laws.
Religious slaughter methods are forbidden in Germany with some exceptions being allowed. In Austria approved slaughter houses in presence of a veterinarian are all that is allowed.
The restriction of Kosher and Halal methods is being debated in Poland, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
The kosher method of butchering food animals is considered to be the very least- painful and quickest way possible ( without anesthetic type drugging the creatures, of course) the idea includes showing respect for the animals and for life, their feelings, etc. the standard method of industrial butchering, by contrast, is— imho — horrid and cruel. ( I can’t speak to Belgium or Islamic butchering, other then to hope it’s at lest less cruel then how they butcher Christians )
I am Catholic, not Jewish, but as others have written, can’t the slaughter be done in a humane way? That is not anti-Semitic.
So I was just about to open a can of Campbells Rustic Lentil Soup and noticed it had a Halal designation on it. Not sure what I should do here. Does this mean someone in the Campbell factory did a brief religious homage over these lentils?
The entire Halal procedure of slaughter and ban of “stunning” is based on the belief that the animal will not “bleed out” properly if any technique is used other then to simply hang the animal by it’s hooves and slit it’s throat. And for thousands of years it was a legitimate concern.
With modern slaughtering methods used now the entire Halal (other than the blessings)form of slaughter is a matter of tradition rather than anything of substantive benefit.
Unfortunately 1000’s of years of tradition and precedent are not likely to change in the foreseeable future.
Long time back I read an article that discussed the cost that the Kosher label adds to a product. Those industrial rabbi’s don’t pray over food for free.
The proscriptions appears to apply specifically to MEAT:

This takes me back to my childhood. My grandfather with uncles help would catch the pigs and hang them from hooks in the center of the barn and just slice their heads off and let them bleed out. Judging from the squealing the process of being caught and hanged was worse than the throat cutting. Farmers did the same thing with beef. Killed and dressed and cured. By the time I grew up and was a farmer’s wife we had the beef butchered and frozen in the same warehouse. We had to go there to pick up what we needed from the freezer for the week. Yep, had to go to town every Saturday.
First Law the Nazis passed after gaining power was to ban Kosher slaughter.
