House Democrats ready strategy to reopen government, deny Trump wall money

Democrats have settled on a strategy for attempting to reopen the government when they take control of the House on Thursday, aimed at ending the partial shutdown quickly — but denying President Trump the new money he wants for a border wall.

Democrats plan to pass a stopgap spending bill to fund the Homeland Security Department through Feb. 8. The bill would extend the existing $1.3 billion spending level on border fencing and other security measures, far short of the $5 billion Trump has sought to build new walls along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The GOP-controlled Senate passed a similar stopgap measure earlier this month, but Trump subsequently rejected it. It’s unclear how the Senate would respond if presented with the plan again.

Under Democrats’ plan, the House would also pass a package of six other spending bills to fund an array of federal agencies that have been shuttered since Dec. 22, including the Interior, Agriculture, Commerce and Justice Departments. Hundreds of thousands of workers at those agencies and others are home on furlough, facing the possibility of missing paychecks depending on how long the shutdown lasts.

Those six spending bills would be passed through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year, at levels already embraced on a bipartisan basis in the Senate — an approach aimed at pressuring the Senate to go along.

The bills to reopen government will be among the first votes cast by Democrats when they take control of the House and open the 116th Congress. The legislation was expected to be made public later Monday. Details were confirmed by two House Democratic aides speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement.

Trump should point out that funding one agentency at a time is the same as giving the president a line item veto and “so funding them is illegal”.

‘Rats & RINOs wanted about $8 trillion, Trump signed their bills from January 2017 to December 2018.

Trump now wants $5 billion, ‘Rats said no and RINOS said no vote scheduled.

It’s like Trump had handed out a $10 bill and is getting refused a penny.

House Dems getting ready to deliberately keep Americans in danger, and the voters asked to be kept in danger. Crazy stuff.

Trump should reject any and all CRs. Make the Congress pass each appropriation like they are supposed to.

The WaPo has declared victory - now let them produce one. In fact, the Dems are going to do diddly squat so long as they keep the government shut down. Funny how that works out, isn’t it?

There actually is a way to get Mexico to build and pay for a wall - smuggle guns into Mexico.

The Mexican government fears guns greatly.

We’ve got plenty of excess guns to export.

I don’t recommend it since it would endanger Mexican and US law enforcement personnel.

It’s probably illegal too.

Factory made guns might have secret markings.

¡Muralla, por favor!

Just keep it shut down for as long as it takes.

I hate to say it but Trump's messaging leaves a lot to be desired. He should announce - daily - another ridiculous government program he's eliminating as long as this whole thing goes on, a la Rand Paul's "Festivus" pronouncements.

If we're lucky perhaps entire departments will be shut down, including the southern border. We'll see who blinks then.

Will the GOP in the Senate have the intestinal fortitude to do as they should?

No, no, NO! A thousand times NO! We are not Frenchmen whining about our benefits after allowing our country to be overrun by migrants.

Isn't there a rule that after 30 days the exit packages are distributed..?

No deal.

If the Senate caves, then veto. What does Trump have to lose?

Since Homeland Security is an unfunded department, we should send all those waiting back to their country so that the personnel needed to care for them can be furloughed.

Either chamber has the 2/3rds for veto override.

If the Honduran thugs get amnesty, they can get citizenship and buy guns.

The Mexican gangs might charge a fee equal to two AR-15s for their expediting services.

Five thousand Hondurans might mean 10,000 AR-15s in the hands of Mexican gangs.

Start getting rid of whole departments. One a week should do it.

“What’s the political upside for Trump giving in?

There’s none and how to keep the government open is now the Rats’ problem.”

That’s why the media is out there working overtime framing the issue as gubmint shutdown, not about illegal immigration. If this article is true, it appears that the democraps have negotiated entirely with themselves and are acting like the President doesn’t matter...they think the old rules are in place and they are going to push him around. Good luck with that. They are in for a long 2 years. The GOPe hopefully realize that their future is tied to the President’s and the Senate never comes close an override, let alone even allowing the House plan to even come up for a vote - hoping McConnell is telling them it is a non-starter - just like Harry Reid bottled up GOP House legislation. I am for deadlocked government, wish it would happen more often, especially when any democrap legislation is offered.

If a bill comes to Trump with no wall funding, in my dreams Trump would do it publicly and before he signs it, play 3 times a montage of democraps stating their past positions on against illegal immigration... Bill Clinton, the WV Senator snake Monchan-BS-er, and end it with Schumer’s illegal aliens / wall speech. Veto it and send it back.

Just hoping and praying Trump doesn’t bend on this. Hold out till hell freezes over and stick it to the RATS. 5 billion for the wall, an end to “catch and release” and terminate granting entry to relatives of immigrants. When the food stamp money runs out in January the RATS will fold. Not too many food stampers support Trump anyway.

It’s unclear how the Senate would respond if presented with the plan again.

I bet the Republican Senate will back the Dems over the GOP President.

“Either chamber has the 2/3rds for veto override.”

If that’s the case let the RATS and RINOS put their name on a bill to override a veto to secure our borders. Many will lose their seat the next time up for re-election.

No, the senate will not desert the President.

The President is the defacto head of the Republican party.

The fact would be plain to all but those deaf, dumb and blind when the President vetos a bill that lacks the override votes.
