Angela Merkel: Germany to take on greater global responsibility
bbc.com ^ | December 31, 2018 | BBC

In 2019 Germany will assume greater international responsibility and must stand up for its convictions, Angela Merkel has vowed in an annual address.

The chancellor said old certainties about international cooperation had "come under pressure", alluding to strained US-German relations. This year, President Donald Trump and the chancellor have clashed on German domestic and foreign policy issues.

Mrs Merkel's New Year's speech will be broadcast in full later on Monday.

Over the past year, Chancellor Merkel has been a leading defender of multilateralism, in contrast to Mr Trump's America First foreign policy. "In our own interest, we must take on more responsibility," the German leader said, warning that global problems like climate change, migration and terrorism cannot be solved alone.

By taking up a temporary seat on the UN Security Council in 2019 and 2020, Germany would push for "global solutions", Ms Merkel said.

“Germany currently enjoys record employment and is paying down the national debt.”

Perfect time to pull ALL our troops out from there. Let them fund their own military. See how long socialism survives.

Germany funds its own military and is less socialist than USA.

Let”s pull out today. I don’t see anyone here stopping us. You might want to consider the effect on US military industrialism.

Agreement was made with the Euro officials to reduce Euro tariffs and to negotiate other terms of trade to American satisfaction.

Really? Please post the agreement.

We need tariffs. We need to pull out of Europe, except for Poland.

Is that so?

Interesting they could not hold power in Egypt. Failed in Syria. Failed in Iraq. Still struggling in Afghanistan.

Well, it seems rational people dodged the tariff tax bullet and agreed to meet or come very close to the Trump requirement for a new bilateral trade agreement.

As far as I know, all of it is not finalized but there are no collected tariffs on Euro items especially the threatened aluminum and steel and autos.

I don’t know about trucks but I’m pretty sure a decrease or elimination of tariffs on American pickups is part of the deal

The US military has numerous bases there, and troops inject tons of cash into their economy. And Germany has cradle to grave social programs, with strict laws about mandatory paid vacation time and maximum hours worked. Very difficult to start a business there. Everything is regulated way beyond what we see in the US. And in the US, we’re actually cutting regulations.

Pull our troops, shut the bases. Let Germany fund their own defense. All of it. 100%. And I don’t give a damn about military industry overseas, US or other. Sink or swim time.

Dodged a bullet, or sold out the American worker to Wall Street, Free Traitors™ and Goldman Sachs?

Thanks for being specific. Knew you were coming from some crazy bs.

“To all intents and purposes Germany has long since ceased to be a capitalist country. “The capitalist system has been replaced by the National Socialist system which is borne along by an entirely different spirit and obeys entirely different intrinsic laws from those which control the capitalist economy.”

I look at Germany as a rebellious adolescent. Talented in some ways but woefully confused about the adult world.

I hope greater global responsibility doesn't mean Fourth Reich.

It’s terrible considering they were supposed to fill a worker shortage.

As for their military...https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/a-european-recruitment-drive-wont-fix-germanys-broken-military

They’d get the crap kicked out them by the NYC cops.

Your ideas about Germany are way behind the time. Many US troops were already pulled out. Starting a business in German is not difficult. Visit any mall or shopping area.

USA has food stamp programs feeding tens of millions of people. You won’t find any such socialist program in Germany.

I agree pull out the relatively few forces. Oh, but Germany is a NATO country.

You are mixed up. Refugees fled here because Obama screwed up in the Middle East. They fled being burned alive by ISIS. There was a humanitarian crisis created by the US. I am sure the Germans would accept a simple thank you.
