They don't actually believe he's innocent. At least not the scum who head the various communist organizations. Their goal is to get ignorant gullible fools to believe it, particularly young naive people. Same for most of their 'causes'.
The “Free Mumia” movement is the bile duct of anti-American ideology. Hatred is all that’s required for membership.
If my experience with the Pennsylvania appellate courts is any guide, he will lose any new appeal as well. Unfortunately, that probably leads to further appeals in the Federal courts, and I’m not as certain about them. The great likelihood, though, is that Mumia dies in prison, just as he should. Fortunately, in Pennsylvania, there is no parole from a life or death sentence.
