It was a real eye-opening book. I know how to garden pretty well. I do have 90 days supply of food. I’m not going to be one of these people that puts a whole year away though.

I am not one of those people who put a years worth of food away either. We have much more than that. Since we have 9 children we have enough food and other supplies to take care of us the kids and their kids for quite an extended time. We put solar electric in the house, I have lot of solar electric, enough that we could continue to live the way we now do without the grid.

I am not an EMP denier but I do believe that EMP’s as we think about them are over rated. Electromagnetic radiation dissipates at the square of the distance. It would take an unbelievably huge bomb to take out all of North America. A smaller bomb at a much lower altitude could perhaps take out a city or two. There is a problem however with attacking the USA. We would know who it was and retaliate. If it was some third rate country with no electricity we would annihilate, all those who participated in it would die. If it was a civilized country they know we would do the same to them and worse.

I think when we are hit with nuclear weapons it will be from a ship in a harbor not a space bomb.

When we are hit, and I do believe it is inevitable, our government will have the means to do some helping to keep people going. The US is a resilient people, some will profit from the situation and as long as there is an opportunity to get rich people will be fed and sheltered. Water will be the worst problem. That is one reason we bought property with a natural spring and why we store hundreds of gallons of drinking water.

What scares me is trying to protect what we have. If all the kids come home we will have a pretty decent army.

I don't think EMP is the end all to end all, I do believe that EMP and other threats are very real and we should prepare for them but most don't. I would recommend if you don't you rethink the situation.

90 days is not enough unless you can provide for yourself and stretch that out beyond 6 months or longer.

Have books on the shelf for your local wild options; you will come to rely upon those, especially mushrooms if your climate permits.

General questions for you and others:

Do you have black spray paint?
Do you have smokeless cooking ability?
If you have a genny, is it audible at 100 meters?

Any one of those and you might as well have a strobe light on top of your house and a 1 ton dinner bell. You may think you can defend yourself, but I’ll give a little tip: I’ve been saving my empty whisky bottles. Guess why. Unless you live in a stone house, you’re vulnerable.

I’ve had these conversations with folks who thought they had it all together; I hope you really do.

For most people, when I mention the “have-nots” they either stomp away or turn white. I’ve never been thanked or agreed with except in Conservative company.

I’m still hunting for a small, isolated town with its own water and nowhere near an interstate that I can call home in 20-25 years; sometimes I think it doesn’t exist.

I will give The Walking Dead some credit: It’s mainstreamed disaster preparedness. Conversely, for many people it’s nearly impossible to bridge their bias for Hollywood BS.

I have not read that book, but I know the signs: When lights, cell phones & radio go out simultaneously, for me the clock resets to zero and I have no expectation whatsoever that they will come back on.
