After The New York Times reported that death row inmate Kevin Cooper may have been framed for the murder of a family of four in 1983, he got the Christmas present of new hope on Monday when California Gov. Jerry Brown ordered a new DNA test that could prove his innocence.

Wonderful Christmas news: Gov Brown has ordered DNA testing in the case of Kevin Cooper, whom I believe was framed for a quadruple murder. After several decades, we may finally learn definitively what happened. Congrats to Cooper, his legal team, and all who fought for testing.

"Cooper stipulated in court to kidnapping and raping a minor female who interrupted him during one of the burglaries in Pennsylvania. Seven weeks later, while still staying on the couple's boat, Cooper was accused of raping a woman on a boat docked nearby. "

I guess the Me Too movement ignores a habitual criminal, prison escapee, multiple murderer, serial rapist, if he is a black man.

It may be naive on my part, but strangely, I never put myself in a position that might lead to it being plausible that I committed a crime that I didn’t.

Of all the people in prison for crimes they didn’t commit, I wonder how many are actually, 100% innocent, of crimes *related* to the crime they were imprisoned for.

Anything to cast doubt on the criminal justice system.

**Cooper’s attorney, Norman Hile, previously said evidence was planted on his client and that newer and more sensitive DNA tests would prove that.

He also argued that investigators planted other evidence to frame Cooper, according to the AP. Multiple appeals have been denied, and Cooper remains in San Quentin Prison.**

IDK, I will wait and see...

If he really didn’t do it then a murderer has been free for all these years.

The guy sounds like a real piece of work.

DNA evidence had ALWAYS been used only to convict [until O.J.] and then Barry Scheck, famous for convicting on DNA evidence; followed the money, and did what he was paid to do - he discounted the DNA evidence as LAPD shennanigans - perpetrated by white racist Officers.

I am cynical regarding the outcome.

(Doubly cynical since I found out Gov. Moonbeam got involved...)

Tell that to General Flynn. A corrupt prosecutor can put you in prison on a whim.

And we have many corrupt prosecutos.

i am fine with testing verdicts, convictions

I have seen too damned many false charges... in some instances where those bringing the charges KNEW FULL WELL they were false

our justice system is not perfect, nothing is, and if we are to respect (and if we want other folks to respect) our justice system, we need to check its performance like this... and always watch how our courts, prosecutors, and police are functioning... there ARE corrupt people in ALL lines of work, INCLUDING in our justice system

a new DNA test that could prove his innocence.

And if it doesn't prove his innocence? If it in fact confirms his guilt? Will we hear about that too? Will the criminal apologists admit they were duped? Or will they just find some other reprobate to champion?

Copper is an animal tbat should have been shot a long time ago. I lived nearby when he escaped Chino Prison and butchered that family. Of course the story doesn’t mention why the cops knew it was him.

I’m sorry to hear that. I think we’ve all learned some sad lessons about our criminal justice system lately.

If he’s guilty then there’s no harm in doing an additional DNA test to confirm this.

Any way that soft-on-crime bias can work it’s way into DNA analysis? Do we record who does the testing? Is there a paper trail?

My heart goes out to you and to your son. I don't know about this case, but there are innocent people in prison. Police are pressured to close cases, prosecutors tout their conviction rate. The system does not reward impartial due diligence. And of course, for everyone unjustly convicted there is a guilty party left free.
