Cussler’s books are pure fantasy, and he is cheating the reading public by not advertising them as such. They go way beyond science fiction, and have no relation whatsoever to adventure or drama.
The last Cussler book I read was more than forty years ago, and I think it was called “Iceberg.” It was so ridiculous I literally threw it across the room before I was even half way through it, and yelled “Fraud!” My girlfriend at the time picked it up off the floor, looked at the cover, and said, “Oh, this guy.” Smart girl.
