Detective Deidre Mengedoht was killed when her patrol car was struck by an impaired driver while conducting a traffic stop on I-64, between 4th Street and 6th Street, in downtown Louisville just after 2:00 pm.

Her vehicle was stopped in the right lane with its emergency equipment activated when it was struck from behind by a Metropolitan Sewer District tractor-trailer. The patrol car was pushed into the vehicle she had stopped and became engulfed in flames with Detective Mengedoht trapped inside.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was charged with driving under the influence and murder of a law enforcement officer.

Detective Mengedoght had served with the Louisville Metro Police Department for seven years. She is survived by a young son.

I was pulled over for a fix it ticket. The police said they were checking out pickups for theft tools. Glad they were doing that, my shop had been broken into twice, just a mile or two down the road. But dang dude, do not ever pull me over for a fix it ticket and expect me to park in a danger zone.

Just reduce your speed to barely legal for the freeway (40 mph in PA) and continue to the next exit, choose a spot off the road like convenience store parking lot.

You won't be tagged for "fleeing and eluding".

I remember when it was not this way and officers had the common sense to understand that you are indeed looking for a safer place to pull over. Now days if you don’t pull over immediately you are “running for some reason” and they are going to get out ready to draw their weapon on you.
