The Food and Drug Administration is issuing a warning to avocado eaters: wash the produce before consuming. A recent FDA report said that eating unwashed avocados can lead to Listeria poisoning or salmonella. While the consideration may seem odd, since consumers don't eat the peel of an avocado, washing the avocado is the only sure way to prevent bacteria and dirt from transferring from the peel, to the knife, to the inside portion. According to the report, 0.74 percent of the 1,615 tested avocados were confirmed to show the prevalence of salmonella. Another 361 avocados were tested for listeria pathogens, of which 64 or 17.73 percent tested positive for the bacteria.

Yes, from feces in the growing soil.
Aww yes, that helpful worker from the other side of the border.
Gosh we have a lot to be thankful for.
WTH eats the shell of an avocado?
Avocados grow on trees. I doubt that it is soil-borne pathogens. There is probably some other pathogen pathway.
Like eggs, it transfers from the unwashed shell.
Thru the shell? Or if the shell touches the inside meat?
If the shell or knife that cuts through the shell touches the inside.
Got it; thanks.
Giving-up avocado for a while.
I can live wo/ salmonella and listeria.
I think its when the knife slices through the avocado that the bad stuff on the unwashed skin gets carried into the good stuff inside.
It’s reassuring to know that many Freepers still post without even a cursory read of the article.
LOL! Merry Christmas to you and yours.
You go to the Grocery Store and look through the Avocado bin to find ones that are sufficiently Ripe, but not too Ripe.
How many People handle the Avocado you end up buying? How many of those People wash their hands after using the Restroom?
Life is a Seinfeld Episode so act accordingly.
I remember my Wife telling me that a Coworker brought in one of those Popcorn Tins and everyone was sticking their hands in and taking a scoop. She was grossed out especially when the UPS Guy came in and took a handful.
You cut the peel off with a knife, knife gets contaminated, knife hits flesh of fruit.
Just upholding FR’s “tradition”...
And a very Merry Christmas to you & yours.
LOL. HE has kept his 2018 New Years Resolution for 51 weeks. You expect him to quit now?
Got it; should have read more than the first sentence. I use a red hot axe, BTW.
Even more handle the tomatoes of which the skins are eaten raw. Just wash everything. A grocery store is the worst place for people touching everything on the shelf with their nasty hands.
These days, I wash my hands immediately coming in from the grocery store, put the food up and wash them again.
The problem is when the knife slices through the skin and takes all those nasty germs with it to the inside edible part.
Poopy dirty hands that pick them off trees.
Amazing that the FDA would have to tell us to do this. These things grow out in the open where birds, bugs, and other animals will crawl over them and drop ‘presents’ on them, they are handled when picked, shipped, and stocked, as well as by consumers trying to figure out which one they want - most of whom did not just wash their hands or decide to use hand sanitizer just before doing so. Of course they need to be washed.
I hired a guy to shovel our drive and walk this winter. New guy was using a snowblower yesterday. I went out to say “hi” and he shakes my hand (with his heavy winter gloves on), then says “I’m really sick.”
I went straight to the sink and hot water when I got in.
