On Sunday, Dec. 9, Julian von Abele, CC 21, a sophomore in the physics department, made a series of claims perpetuating white male supremacy, especially in science, and further harassed a group of primarily Black women on campus. This incident of racism that occurred on campus showed that science and physics academia blatantly and covertly attacks minoritiesand their ability to be a part of the field. His rhetoric further reflected an existing pattern in science academia...
A group of undergraduates studying physics at Columbia felt particularly troubled that online comments in forums defending von Abeles rant used his work in physics as a smokescreenpainting his bigotry as an inflammatory outburst of a brilliant mind. Following the videos release, members of the undergraduate physics community at Columbia and Barnard decided that it was important to stand against the supremacist's hateful remarksto debunk and dismantle them from the standpoint of scientists.
Columbia as an institution is no stranger to bigotry, sexism, and institutional racism. While von Abeles words were violent and destructive on their own, they by no means marked an isolated incident, but rather remind us that the neglect of minorities is normalized in the department and the school. The culture of silence that myself and my peers have felt around similar incidents is a subsequent act of neglect, and a direct response of disciplinary and institutional action from the administration should be in order.
Though often privileged as a meritocracy, physics is as susceptible to intolerance, discrimination, and inequality as any other field. Scientists are human and thus are not without bias. These biases dictate the way science is done and who gets to do it. The abstract and formal nature of physics does not represent the absence of outside cultural influence but a distinctive manifestation of it.

I’d like to see T-shirts in stores around the ‘hood
that say, “Voting is acting white.”
The moral of the story: Science and facts must be deemed racist, to exclude them from political discussion, if they counter the Party line. The same applies to any morality or ethics.
This stuff would have happened sooner or later anyway. You get to the top of the hill, theres always someone whos ready to knock you off of it.
I’m setting up my noose as I type. With my demise one less white, heterosexual male on earth civilization will one step closer to Nirvana.
Oh my God!
I read that in Charlie Day’s voice.
Can’t say I disagree with the premise, but the execution was HILARIOUS!
I’m not gonna say, “Some of my best friends are black”, but I know a lot of people, some very good people, some, not so much. I can say the same about Whites, Mexicans, Asians.
“Youre welcome. I just wish wed
picked our own damned cotton.”
Whites didn’t start slavery; blacks did.
W/o the cotton pickin’ we would have brought far fewer over here. Mississippi was once a power-house state, unimaginable as this is now.
More evidence that blacks and whites are better off going their separate way.
Why continue this dysfunctional disaster of a marriage?
His voice getting hoarse and while jumping in the air, von Abele then yelled, I love myself and I love white people. F*ck yeah white people. F*ck yeah white men. Were white men, we did everything. I dont hate other people, I just love white men, I love white men.
Okay, something like this does not happen in a vacuum. Some preceding act sparked an outburst like this.
Supposedly he did this in front of a group of black women.
I have to ask what was the conversation like before this outburst? What were these women saying to Mr. Won Abele before his rant?
Will the earlier comments of the black women just be lost to the ether while Von Abeles comments live on in the false history of modern Liberal apocrypha of White Supremacist evils.
Apparently you are not familiar with the once highly regarded NASSA program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6xJzAYYrX8
There is something even worse and more sinister going on with whites and their perception and treatment of blacks and Hispanics and other minorities...
It’s about how, blacks and Hispanics are being treated as if they are completely helpless idiots who can’t take care of themselves and their families. They are taught to believe that they can’t take care or handle themselves, and therefore, government is their only hope, from cradle to grave.
Those white scientists are nothing compared to the liberal elites in politics and in government and in the media who rationalize and justify the belief that, blacks and Hispanics and other minorities have to be treated as helpless and needy and incapable of handling their own lives.
Let’s see if anyone confronts liberals with those “facts”.
Au contraire! Now they are saying math is racist.
I laughed so hard I cried!
ronnie raygun I guess that you are not aware of the fact that the NASA program relied upon a group of black female mathematicians. There was a movie made about it so it must be true. A very high percentage of physics prize winners are Jewish. I am not Jewish but I recognize this fact without feeling offended. Facts are facts.
Normal people: 2+2=4
Democrats and non-normal people:
2+2=13
2+2=5.774
2+2=-47
2+2=”Ethel”
...etc.
#32. Well, one way to stop letting “math” be “racist” is to ban all math books because the numbers are written on, oh the horror of it, WHITE PAPER.
Then you won’t have any tests on paper, only computers.
Next, no white paper books in any school class. That will end “white supremacy” and “white privilege” once and for all.
Gee, it sounds like a school that Ocasio-Cortez (aka Ocassionally Cortexly challenged) graduated from. Her favorite book in school was “How to Make a Good Martini”.
She is now writing a book about her inauguration as a congresswomanthing. It will not come out in paper form because that would be racist.
