Maybe that is serious stuff, but the article goes off in the weeds about the acronym of the "Neural Information Processing Systems" annual conference - "NIPS." It's been used for decades, but in 2018, it suddenly offends enough of the perpetually-offended that it had to be changed (one would that Japanese conference-attendees would be more put-off by the conference name than women).
Everybody has way too much to worry about these days. Just do your damn jobs.
Now go change my oil and rotate my tires. For those of you outside of useful technologies, those are technologies.
I figured that out as a 10-year-old watching Star Trek.

We can have a lot of fun with this. But AI is a serious subject. Gender bias is the least of the AI problems.
AI has political and religious and social and scientific bias.
For example, a well known AI firm was came out with a pro-immunization report. The data did not support the conclusion. But the bias did. (The data didn’t support the opposite conclusion either.)
The more diversity we have in machine learning, the better job we will do in creating products that dont discriminate, said Hanna Wallach, a Microsoft researcher who is a senior program chairwoman of the conference and co-founder of an associated event for women in machine learning.
A bunch of men engineers were at lunch, and an attractive waitress served us. One of the engineers remarked, Nobody gave her a chance to be an engineer.I replied, Tell you what - Im going to teach her mathematics. After you convince her that (her reproductive opportunities) were nil if she doesnt learn mathematics.
Discussion over. Math is a lot harder (for you or for me) than attracting a man was for that gal, and no one doubted it for a microsecond. And she didnt have to be a genius to know it, and nothing short of her being a true genius would have negated that fact.
More garbage. Money burned trying to get more women into STEM. Promoting women who arent qualified for diversity... etc etc. nonsense.
Wait, all those male engineers have nips too! Can they explain what their nips are for?? ;)
I fail to see any problem. Who’s blowing the alarm in the areas where women greatly outnumber men about it being such a terrible problem as it is now, and that reaources and incentives and laws must be pushed through to correct this terrible imbalance?
The human mind has an intellect and emotions. If you create AI you have to program in a simulation of emotions. Whose do you choose? A mans or a womans? They are different, as every married man knows.
Do you want the intelligence ruled by emotions? Or do you want the two in a harmonious balance?
Funny, if men are women and women are men then there is no gender gap because according to the left there honestly is no such thing as gender.
Ask yourself why there are Chess Tournaments and Chess Titles restricted to women.
ML/NJ
bullshit. There were exactly as many females in those positions as there should be.
By definition: You EARN that position, by doing meaningful work.
If the number of women happens to be zero ... so be it.
Do we really want AI that is moody and holds a mean grudge forever?
But most of the helpful AI voices sound like women - don’t that count for nothing?
