A Los Angeles college student who sued his school for allegedly curbing his right to free speech after it prevented him from passing out copies of the U.S. Constitution was vindicated in court this week.
The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), which represents nine schools, including Pierce College, agreed on Wednesday to settle a lawsuit filed against them last year by student Kevin Shaw after he was barred from passing out copies of the document because he wasnt in the schools designated free speech zone, which measured 616 square feet or about the size of three parking spaces.
As a part of the settlement, the tiny area marked for students to exercise their first amendment rights will be abandoned altogether, revoking a district-wide policy that declared all property on the districts nine campuses to be non-public forums with speech restrictions. As part of the settlement, LACCD will pay Shaws $225,000 in attorney fees.

Amazing that the same schools that cried for free speech fifty years ago are trying to silence it today.
Good to see they aren’t getting away with it!
Good for this patriot who valued his constitutional right to free speech enough to fight for it.
.
Fifty years ago the universities were not bastions of communism.
FIRE was involved-——I’m on their E-Mail list and they do incredible work.
.
How the Hell can colleges even defend these ridiculous “free speech zones”?
GMTA, but you’re missing a few bits.
America is a Free Speech Zone.
I Know, but I just could not pass up that bright RED outline.

Thanks Libloather.
Some were. I was living one mile from Stanford in 1968. I considered it communist even then as a relatively naive but conservative boy.
When time came to apply to universities, though I had the grades, awards, SATs and ACTs to apply anywhere, I left Stanford off my list.
The settlement does not go nearly far enough. Having the taxpayers of California pay $225,000 of attorney fees on behalf of Pierce College for Kevin Shaw makes a mockery of justice.
Thirteen individuals, named in the lawsuit, conspired under color of law to deny Kevin Shaw his First Amendment rights. Those thirteen individuals should be terminated for cause, forfeit any pensions or benefits, and face a lifetime prohibition on employment in any position funded by Federal, State, or Local government. They should also be forced to individually pay $10 million in damages to Kevin Shaw.
Pierce College has an annual budget of $82.3 million. That amount should be awarded to Kevin Shaw from the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and then Pierce College be closed permanently. After two years the result would be an annual savings of $82.3 million to the taxpayers of California.
The thirteen individuals named in the lawsuit should be criminally charged for their violation of Kevin Shaw’s civil rights. Upon conviction, they should be sentenced to prison for 8 years, 4 months, and 15 days (the length of the American Revolutionary War) to reflect upon the meaning of our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
