A looming, partial government shutdown would be stupid but might be unavoidable if Democrats refuse to support President Donald Trumps proposed border wall with Mexico, the second-ranking House Republican said on Thursday.
Even if Republicans assemble enough votes to approve the wall in the House, the plan probably will fail in the Senate, said Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California. The House majority leader noted that Senate Democrats have pledged to block the bill from receiving the necessary 60 votes.
McCarthy said on the House floor that he thinks going into a shutdown is stupid, but he offered no immediate plan before the Dec. 21 deadline. The House adjourned for six days soon after his remarks.
McCarthys comments put him at odds with Trump, who said this week that he would be proud to shut down the government in the name of border security. [ ]
Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the Senates No 2 Republican, said he does not understand Trumps strategy. Maybe hes figured it out and hell tell us in due course, but I dont understand it, Cornyn told The Washington Post.

Exactly
He's gone in 2020...
The problem is that he, and a very significant number of Republicans, don't see the left as an enemy. They see them as competitors for their elected office, and their only concern from a ‘partisan’ perspective is to make sure they do whatever they can to ensure that they are in the best position to get reelected. In that regard, they will never stick their neck out any further than they think is politically prudent. In short, they are unprincipled selfish political hacks. Many would be perfectly happy to hold the same seat with a D after their name - as long as they could hold on to the position and power.
Integrity is not abundant in the US government. That much has become entirely clear to anyone who has been paying attention.
Franklin Roosevelts rapid conversion from Constitutionalism to the doctrine of unlimited government is an oft-told story. But I am here concerned not so much by the abandonment of states rights by the national Democratic Party an event that occurred some years ago when that party was captured by the socialist ideologues in and about the labor movement as by the unmistakable tendency of the Republican Party to adopt the same course. [ ] Thus, the cornerstone of the Republic, our chief bulwark against the encroachment (on) individual freedom by Big Government, is fast disappearing under the piling sands of absolutism. This has been going on long before I was born. The epithet Uniparty is the most accurate one out there.
The Republican Party, to be sure, gives lip service to states rights. We often talk about returning to the states their rightful powers; the Administration has even gone so far as to sponsor a federal-state conference on the problem. But deeds are what count, and I regret to say that in actual practice, the Republican Party, like the Democratic Party, summons the coercive power of the federal government whenever national leaders conclude that the states are not performing satisfactorily.

See post 25. They see them as allies, more like. They keep up the pretense of a two-party system in order to hold on to power and push a Fabian means of forcing socialism on the country.
Wonder why it didn’t show up on a title search. After all, the titles match.
Get some smelling salts, Kevin. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
After Trump the Rs are cooked. Permanently.
You dont disappoint, McCarthy. We knew you would be Ryan 2.0
GOPe = RAT = UniParty = Deep State = Communists = Fake Americans
Sure, they all wear different hats, but they are ALL for the SAME AGENDA. There is no 2-party system. It’s all a hoax to keep the “unwashed masses” believing in a fallacy. There is only one party and it’s the UniParty, nothing else. What the UniParty wants, the UniParty gets by one means or another. Just look at all the so-called “stolen” seats in the last election. Those seats were deliberately flipped by the RAT side of the UniParty for the specific purpose to bring the POTUS down. Oh, forget the ballot box. That, too, is nothing but a “feel good” fallacy for the “unwashed”.
“but I dont understand it,”
Senator Cornyn, let me help you. 60% plus of Americans keep demanding a wall to secure the Southern border. People turned out by the millions to cheer Donald Trump when he was pledging to build a wall.
We want a wall. I understand that you globalists want cheap labor. We want border security.
It is that simple.
Pass a bill to fund building the wall. No government shutdown.
Are you REALLY this dense?
“The House majority leader noted that Senate Democrats have pledged to block the bill from receiving the necessary 60 votes.”
Use the so called nuclear option. Of course, that’s just the way the Senate was for almost ALL of it’s history.
I will never miss government if it shuts down
“Can he stop the paychecks of the House and Senate by Executive Order?”
It’s time for helicopter rides...
Its a budget item ... pass it under reconciliation. Only 50 votes needed. Pass it in the House before The session ends and hold it in the Senate until January.
It’s only stupid to those who don’t want a wall.. who think it’s unnecessary. Who don’t give a d***.
Take a good look at the caravans that came up to our borders.. more were in the process of making the trip.. and we don’t need a wall?
Count up the amount tax payers pay to keep 1 illegal immigrant for however long we have to pay for their keep.. multiply it by a million.. and that alone would pay for a wall.. to keep them out.
Shut down the government for two years. Go for it Trump. Watch the Dems try to legislate a closed up government like Hitler moving around imaginary armies at the end of his reign.
This is the same Kevin McCarthy, who just a few weeks ago, while running to take over leadership from Paul Ryan, made a big show of proposing his heavily advertised “Build the Wall and Enforce the Law Act”.
Seems that he just dropped it like a used tissue, right after getting elected.
