China appeared to intensify its punitive campaign against Canada over the arrest of a top Chinese technology executive as a second Canadian working here was detained by security officials and dropped out of contact with his government.
The second case involves Michael Spavor, a writer and entrepreneur who operates a cultural organization that promotes trips into North Korea. A newspaper linked to the provincial government in Liaoning, along the border with North Korea, reported that he had been detained by security officials there on charges of engaging in activities jeopardizing Chinas national security.
Mr. Spavor gained prominence for helping arrange the visits there by Dennis Rodman, the former N.B.A. star. During one of those visits, Mr. Spavor met the countrys reclusive leader, Kim Jong-un, and in appearances in Beijing he would fondly speak about their friendship, though the extent of it was not clear.
He posted notes on Twitter and Facebook on Sunday that he planned to travel to South Korea on Monday for several days of consulting work. He did not appear, as planned, at a lecture organized there by the Royal Asiatic Society, according to members of the group.

If he had any balls he’d go on a hunger strike.
The dragon lady has been given bail (ten million bucks) — apparently she wasn’t just changing planes in Vancouver, she and her family have a mansion there (seems like one of two permanent homes). So she’s back there now huddling with lawyers and Chinese diplomats. The PRC has a large consulate in Vancouver because of the sizeable Chinese population, it has been the site of some ongoing Falun Gong protests but otherwise just seems to be a trade mission.
Western Canada’s economy is pretty much tied to Chinese imports of our natural resources. So we have more leverage than some might think. But if I were that guy in China, I would just hang in there, this won’t go on much longer. Apparently Trump himself isn’t that keen on this arrest, he’s saying if it endangers trade with China, then he might step in and call off the extradition.
Apparently there is no formal request yet for said extradition, our cops picked up this executive because there was an outstanding warrant and it was assumed the United States would want to have her extradited. Now that is not so clear. Confucius say, check with top man before handcuffs used.
Soy boy will fold. And the deep state operation to sabotage Trump’s China negotiation will collapse.
China continues to see through the lens of empire. Big shots who are approved by other big shots and believed to be loyal are special, and arresting them can only be construed as hostage-taking. Only the little people are arrested.

Thanks Theoria.
So we're supposed to be OK with the policy established by GHW Bush of looking the other way (e.g. Tienanmen) and continue to look away when the person detained is violating our Iranian policy?
I don't get it. I'm not for reinstituting Carter's moralistic foreign policy, but we have to show some balls in the face of China's egregious violations of human rights, trade agreements, and international law.
Wow a call and a raise.........
Meng has become “Meh!”
A shistol pot heard around the world as Canada breaks from the Trudeau Dipsy Doodle International Policy of virtue signalling, to try to follow our extradition treaty with the USA.
A warrant is a warrant, execute it and send her off to the Land of Thunder.
But now, Canada does the dipsey doodle while Trudeau sells Canada down the tubes for a little egg foo yung. Trudeaus narrow little mind behind the hair and dimple thinks sophomoric-ally that he is getting even with Trump.
How many times does Justin have to be taken to the wood shed before he learns anything about how to treat allies? He must be more than slightly retarded.
Yessir. Boy Trudeau is playing WAY above his head here.
Unless China’s and Canada’s little game is all for show...
China is going to harass Canadian and American citizens in China over her. Perhaps Trump might want to stick it in China’s craw and ban Huawei and their parent corp ZTE completely from business in the US. This will definitely put ZTE under and will be a lot worse for China than just nailing this one Iran sanctions buster . We have a toxic trade relationship with the parasitic enemy Chinese. The sooner Trump drops them as a trading partner and returns them to an agrarian society the better
