The Senate passed the bill Tuesday on an 87-13 vote, although Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy was a no, criticizing the "missed opportunity to reform" the food stamp program.
Congress has reached a compromise deal on a new Farm Bill to set agriculture policy for five years, but it won't expand work requirements for food stamps, which had been a priority of U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham of Louisiana and President Donald Trump.

But the bill doesn't expand work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as food stamps. Work requirements are technically in this bill and previous bills, but many states, including Louisiana, routinely waive them.

Our farmers are an integral part of our country’s history and economy, but unfortunately this bill has become about more than supporting our farmers,” Kennedy said. “Too much of this bill is devoted to irresponsible food stamp distribution that fails to help people realize the dignity of work. I could not support this bill because it does not contain stronger work requirements for food stamps. I am disappointed at this missed opportunity to reform the SNAP program, and I am more disappointed in the failure to negotiate a more fair and effective Farm Bill for our farmers.”

VETO the Welfare for Farmers bill and Set Up Soup Kitchens around the Country
When we bug out of NYS, we won’t be moving to any state that waives the work requirement.
Can Trump veto it? Sounds veto proof.
Trump should veto it on principle. Make those expletives-deleted override it.
Merely “caving” disguised as “compromise”. Obviously holding the WH, senate and the house the past two years didn’t gain us much. Of course it will be more than the next two years when nothing happens. Or the “conservatives” “compromise” for some more stuff.
Pres. Trump can veto if he wants to make a point, but the veto will prove futile. Of note, the bill passed with 87 votes, 10 more than is needed to override a veto.
Trump should veto and tell them he won’t sign unless SNAP requirements tightened. Make those who vote to override truly own their acceptance of govt hand outs to man undeserving/unwilling to work to earn their food, and their stabbing working us citizens in the back by allowing such lax rules and abuse of system.
Yup! Veto it! And make it a roll-call vote!! Or contingent on a shutdown.
Get used to it.
And the Republicans wonder why they are circling the drain. We expect that crud from the democrats and vote against them , but the ‘other side’ shouldn’t be screwing the country, too.
Bush League Republicans must become extinct before the Republic does.
Gotta keep subsidizing Kraft-Heinz, ConAgra, Kelloggs, Del Monte, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, Piggly Wiggly, et. al.
Del Monte is no mas. It was sold to an overseas firm quite a few years ago..
We need a Congress that is courageous enough to separate the food stamp program from ANY agricultural bill at all. They are jointly the most corrupt legislation Congress passes. Neither program has to stand or fall on its own merits. Those demanding the farm subsidies get the backing of those who really don’t give a dam about the farm subsidies but want to sustain or boost the food stamp program - and vice versa.
How to get that? As a starter we need a president who says they will not sign a bill with the two programs in it.
I wish they’d start calling it the ‘Welfare Bill’ not the ‘Farm Bill’. The vast majority of the expenses for the Dept of Ag is the welfare program.
And this is the Senate that will vote against impeachment? Only in your dreams. The Senate can’t wait for an impeachment “trial”. They will vote their “conscience”and the Deap State wins.
