The Vatican — under the direction of Pope Francis — will soon change the verbiage in the Lord’s Prayer to clarify God does not, in fact, tempt people.

The pope has taken issue with the phrase, “Lead us not into temptation,” one stanza of the Lord’s Prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13.

Pope Francis Enacting Change to Lord’s Prayer: ‘Lead Us Not Into Temptation’.

That’s going to go over like a fart in church. Forget it, Pope Frankie.

God gave us free will.

That he provided temptations for us to either do good or go the evil way, is what that phrase means: “lead us not into temptation”. He provided the temptations, and also gave us free will for us to make the proper decisions.

He can change it all he wants. I’m 71, and will continue to say it the way I learned it. Hasn’t done me any damage all these years. If it ain’t broke...don’t fix it.

For once I agree with this man. But I’ll not change how I say the prayer.

I am in the midst of a move. Having a hard time finding a Catholic Church that suits my needs. If PF makes this change official, I’m going to my sister-in-law’s Methodist Church. The congregants and pastor are much more welcoming than my geographic catholic parish.

If only we had the lost Aramaic of Matthew to see what it said in Aramaic.

Available from Amazon:

THE HEBREW GOSPEL OF MATTHEW Paperback – July 1, 2005

First review:

This is a very interesting in depth research of a very important New Testament topic. I found Dr. Howard's arguments very convincing to prove that some passages of the Shem-Tov manuscript reflect an Hebrew origin. Because I am specialized in New Testament studies, I wanted to make some questions to Dr. Howard, and I tried to contact him through his Faculty, but I learnt that he is a retired person now, and they don't have his references. What a pity!!! If some of you know how to contact him, please let me know.

I believe other copies derived from the original Hebrew have been located.

Fenton translation has them all beat by about a hundred years:

“And forgive us our faults, as we forgive those offending us, for You would not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

The ‘temptation’ (or one of them) that is being referred to is :

Man sees Gods work (all of creation in all its infinite detail) and Says ‘Hey I can do that too’ or ‘Thats not so special’

Its the temptation to be arrogant in ignorance after getting only a glimpse of what God has created, and assuming that YOU are capable of that, when you cannot and never will.

"Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil." Matthew 4:1

"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil. . . ." Luke 4:1, 2.

I'm not familiar with the Fenton translation, but it isn't a literal one here.

The Greek verb in Matt. 6.13 is an imperative form (in the negative: "do not lead us")--"for You would not lead" is not an imperative.

“It’s Satan who leads us into temptation, that’s his department.”

Is he speaking for himself? How convenient.
