Sounds like an idealogue or religious fanatic. The science pointed to a clear conclusion, but he fought against it and hoped that his cherished article of faith ("species are millions of years old and all come from a single ancestor") could be maintained. Alas, the Bible has it more right than Darwin.

But anything observed can be folded in to evolutionary theory.
