I once went to civil court over a matter. I found an attorney I could confer with while pursuing the matter.

It took hours of time, but it things like this usually get hashed out in mediation and the plaintiff wins a few buck’s worth of ‘walk-away’ money. I think I spent < $500.

One trick: allege that some things are missing.
Nobody wants to go to court; a good threat is usually enough.
It has to be a genuine, scorched-the-earth threat though, not a bluff.

And smile. Always. I decided before court, in dealing with everybody that I would be the nicest son-of-a bitch they ever met. I think I enjoyed it, looking back.
