Your point is valid — if we just “give up” then we get anarchy and anything goes. I would not be happy with that.
On the other hand, I think the role of government is primarily to protect my rights. What we have today is an intrusive government that watches me closely and is prepared to swoop in and punish me anytime I make a wrong step regarding any of their 6 trillion laws.
We may disagree about the details, but I think anyone on this board should support the concept that government should “give up” on stopping at least some of the stuff which is now considered “evil”.
I’m not into so much “punishing” druggies (their dealers, yes) as I am into mandatory drug abuse treatment at their own expense - unless they are your generic run of the mill poverty stricken street druggies (charity cases).
