The campaign in Afghanistan is remarkable for the low level of casualties, both military and civilian, given the (albeit overstated) Afghan reputation for ferocity. The Vietnam War, fought over ~20 years, featured as many as 20,000 civilians dead per year. Whereas Afghan civilian casualties per year have never exceeded 4,000. And on the military side, Vietnamese Communist and ARVN dead averaged 55,000 per year over 19 years, compared to combined Afghan govt/Taliban casualties of just under 7,000 per year.
