The Lord of the Rings series has been branded 'racist' by a science fiction writer who claims orcs are discriminated against and written as inferior.
American author Andy Duncan said British author JRR Tolkien depicted evil creatures such as orcs as 'worse than others' and said this had 'dire consequences for society'.
The criticism comes despite Tolkien being known as a fierce critic of racism, particularly the Nazi Germany regime in the 1930s and 40s.

Except for Orange Man and his white male supporters...they are all evil, evil, eeeeeeevil!!! :)
The Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, Toy and Dale Evans, Sky King and the Lone Ranger are some serious offenders....how dare they not respect the bad guys....
Another way to look at this is One-ism versus Two-ism. Look up the ministry of Peter Jones for an in-depth explanation. Briefly, God’s creation is two-ism. There is good and evil, moral and immoral, male and female, the creator and the creation etc...
One-ism seeks to erase all of this duality. All is one. Eastern mystic religions have been advocating this for centuries. Our current culture is aggressively pursuing this.
When we leave God’s truth we are walking into a dark fantasy.
Atrocity! Those were peaceful orcs migrating to a better life!
It started long, long ago.
A Marxist PhD. in Musicology (Thesis on Rap) I had for Music Literature in 2004 denounced Tolkien as a racist at the end of class, because I dared to speak of W. H. Auden’s positive review of TLOTR.
Tolkien has been historically slandered by leftist professors, I suspect, for the following reasons:
He was a white male from South Africa.
He was a staunch Catholic.
His myth is quasi-Nordic, which emphasizes a pseudo-European civilization.
The Southrons and some others that warred with Arnor and Gondor were darker than the Numenoreans.
The Orcs were black(-ish) - although it is made clear they were Elves in their origin, and were tortured and cursed by Morgoth, master of Sauron.
Tolkien was a world-class expert on Beowulf and Norse Mythology. Of course he would write what he knew.
In real life, he openly resisted any attempt by actual racists to conflate his story with such a political narrative.
This woman who denounced him, by the bye, spent much of the term vilifying white males for “emasculating the black male” and was one of the two most arrogant and offensive college teachers I have ever had.
Her unfounded assertion was: “Tolkien was a racist, you know!”
Actually, I did not, and do not, know that - but she had already left without allowing me to make any rebuttal.
Harper-Collins tried unsuccessfully to Bowdlerize the Narnia Chronicles about 15 years ago: They sought to de-Christianize it.
Not according to Tolkien. He disliked allegory, and preferred what he called feigned history.
He explicitly averred that the Ring was not the A-Bomb.
You arw wrong. I have read it more than two dozen times.
The hobbits frequently display a sense of humor, sometimes subtle, sometimes overt.
Perhaps you do not perceive British wit, or perhaps you do not know the work well.

-——I thought the book was about WWII-——
Both Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were first aid drivers in WWl
“The Hobbit” was published in 1937....
WWll barely started....LOTR is the continuation of the hobbit....
The whole idea that there is no evil is fatally flawed and disproven by history.
Evil by any definition must be opposed or you risk losing your own culture.
When evil targets you for destruction, you (by definition) have entered a fight for your life. There is no surrender or failure. Ask England in WWII.
We see evil afoot in the world today. Genuine evil exists. So load your magazines and put on your helmet. Here is comes again.
Orcs my butt. What about the poor dwarves? Celeborn is clearly prejudiced against the dwarves.
Leftists believe we (the Christian West) = evil.
Self-destruction.
They NEVER call out Muslims countries. When did the pink hats march on Iranian Embassies or any other woman-oppressing country?
They do say there are no absolutes, all relative, can’t judge anyone else. EXCEPT for Christian West. They’re darn sure we have to be stopped.
“Both Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were first aid drivers in WWl ” [Popman, post 91]
Not the case for either author.
Tolkien was a junior officer in the Lancashire Fusiliers; he went into combat in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, fell ill with trench fever, and spent the rest of the conflict in medical treatment or performing reduced duties.
Lewis served as a junior officer in the Somerset Light Infantry, was wounded by shell fragments in April 1918, and was discharged from the army in late December 1918.
Ernest Hemingway was a Red Cross ambulance driver assigned to Italy; he didn’t perform any ambulance duties in action, but did run a canteen operation in support of Italian troops. Wounded by Austrian shellfire in July 1918, he spent most of the rest of the war in a hospital in Milan.
#OrcsLivesMatter
Academics have been finding reasons to hate Lord of the Rings since before I was born. In turns, people have hated it because it:
promotes mind altering drugs (pipe-weed and mushrooms!)
its classist (Frodo is Ssms master)
monarchist/anti-democracy (Kings and princesses marry to reassert control oer Middle-Earth)
sexist (dudes do almost everything and leave women-folk at home)
Satanic (all that evil magic!)
racist (white dudes rule everything at the end: Orcs vanquished, Elves self-deporting, Dwarves and Hobbits second-class minority tribes/enclaves)
anti-industry/ technology (keeping the peeps down by scaring them with magic and enforcing tradition methods)
unserious/unscholarly (romantic fantasy vs. modern literature)
...jealous academics and anti-Tolkienites have been spewing this crap and more for 60-some years!
Hob-nobbin
Wit th goblin
Th goblin girl from the mystery world
Ive been a-hobblin ever since nobblin wit th gobblin girl!
Sad sacks have been bashing LOTR for decades. I may yet live to see them bashing it for a century.
