The Ukrainian president has proposed the imposition of martial law after Russian forces shot at and seized three Ukrainian navy vessels in the Black Sea, injuring six crew members according to Kiev, in a major escalation of tensions between the two countries.

On Monday, Ukrainian MPs will vote on whether to declare nationwide martial law in response to the attack following an emergency war cabinet held by the president, Petro Poroshenko. He said that the imposition of martial law would not imply a declaration of war and is only intended for defensive purposes.

Ukraine has also requested an emergency UN security council meeting in response to the incident.

Sunday was a day of rising tensions between the two countries, with hostilities focusing on the Kerch Strait, which connects the Sea of Azov with the Black Sea, over which Russia has constructed a bridge following its occupation of Crimea to create a direct link between the Russian mainland and the peninsula.

The FSB, Russia’s principal security agency, said its patrol boats had seized three naval vessels from Ukraine and used weapons to make them stop, adding that the boats had entered its territorial waters illegally.

In a televised war council meeting with the president, Ukrainian military commanders said 23 sailors had been taken captive by Russia, six were wounded in fighting, including two seriously.

Pavlo Klimkin, the Ukrainian minister of foreign affairs, said it was “likely possible that Russia plans further acts of aggression at seas or on the ground” and said Ukraine must be “ready” after the president recommended the

So an isolated hostile maritime incident requires a somewhat free people to suddenly find themselves militarily occupied by themselves? Mmmmkay.

It’s the first time Putinist Russia has committed an act of war against Ukraine without hiding behind the “green men” plausible deniability ruse. Major escalation here. I expect Bolton and POTUS will drop the hammer on KGB Vlad.

Martial law allows poroshenko to suspend the elections that he is expected to lose in about 4 months. That’s the problem with coming to power in a coup. You can only remain in power through chicanery. Otherwise you wouldn’t have needed the coup to gain power in the first place.

The Western world is coming apart at the seams. Riots in France, riots at our Southern border, and Russia is capturing ships from another country.

It feels like things are building to an explosive crescendo that won’t turn out well. I hope I’m wrong.

I hope we stay out of it!

Ukraine made its decision on it sovereignty when it gave up nuclear weapons for US & UK guarantees. Can anyone seriously maintain the US &UK will go to war with Russia over Ukraine independence?

There are still plenty of neocon globalist chicken hawks out there ready and willing to do just that, as long as their own lives aren’t on the line.

Setup, related to the internal Ukrainian affairs.

Presidential elections in spring, Poroshenko's popularity is south of 10%, not being reelected would mean not just loss of power but of personal property.

Reelection chances are next to nil, especially after recent hikes of gas and energy prices.

With martial law elections can be postponed, and -- if needed -- competition can be arrested.

Yeah lol

I thought Martial Law was enacted when YOUR own people were causing mischief and mayhem.

Not sure how this will affect the Russian navy.

So the evil Russians "force" Porkyshanker to declare martial law.

Porky is dead last in all the polls so who thinks the elections will be postponed until the "crisis" is past?
