I was paling around with Maynard’s drummer at Summerfest in 1976. They were on the Miller Jazz stage and we were across the concourse at Pabst’s International Pavilion. Between sets, Petie Erskin and I hung out, caught Earth, Wind & Fire and went to breakfast with The Commodores at the Marc Plaza (we didn’t know Lionel Ritchie from Adam back then - Walter Orange was THE man). I knew of Pete’s work from Stan Kenton’s band and had no clue he would go on to gigs like Weather Report and John Abercrombie. I’m not a has-been ... I’m a never-was, lol.

That sounds like Pete’s drumming on that trumpet porn you posted. The Latins are tight and especially near the end where he’s playing that trademark “Birdland” Hi-Hat. Maynard’s band’s were always monsters. His only rival ever was the Rich big band of ‘68 and ‘69 with Don Menza and the Vegas crew - and even then Maynard was flying high with McAuthor Park.
