(CNN) Michael Hayden, a former director of the CIA and National Security Agency, suffered a stroke earlier this week, his family said Friday.
In a statement, the family said Hayden, 73, suffered the stroke at his home and was hospitalized but did not provide details about the stroke's severity.
"He is receiving expert medical care for which the family is grateful," the statement said.
CIA Director Gina Haspel offered wishes on behalf of the agency Friday afternoon for a "speedy recovery."
"Mike's long career of public service & commitment to national security continue to be an inspiration to all intelligence officers. Our thoughts are with Mike, Jeanine, & their family," Haspel said on Twitter. Hayden, a retired four-star Air Force general who is now a CNN national security analyst, served during both the George W. Bush and Obama administrations. He retired as CIA director in 2009.
Since then, he has been a vocal critic of both the Obama and Trump administrations.

A “stroke”. Possible 187 attempt to silence?
Just gotta wonder.
Well, my question is answered, although somewhat mysteriously. Enough said.
I don’t think this guy was always on the side of America!
In the positions he occupied, that means I can’t sum up ANYTHING nice to say about him as the curtain falls on his life on this earth.
I don’t see him making Specialist Five in the Army or Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps. The Air Force has had it’s fair share of weirdo general officers.
Did Casper the Freakin’ Ghost really suffer a stroke or is he claiming he did so he can say, “I do not remember.”?
What a strange coincidence of events.
Another thing for which to be thankful. Can Hayden make it a double thing for which to be thankful?
bye
Excellent question. “My brain is Jell-o” has already been used. So now it’s simple brain damage and “I can’t remember sh!t”. How convenient.
Mike’s long career of public service & commitment to national security continue to be an inspiration to all.................................... Errrr? I think that means he was a “Leaker”.
Another low energy beta male Stumped by the Trump !
William Colby had a tragic canoe accident, didn’t he?
Right now he probably can’t say anything that doesn’t come out as “word salad”. To the best of my knowledge and personal experience though, it does not affect long term memory.
Been there, done that —twice, it sucks.
i wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, but there is a certain poetic justice to this event.
I will choose to say nothing other than this Bush appointee has been venomous and way out of line in his public mudslinging at Trump and I guess he will be a bit quiet for awhile, perhaps quite awhile.
