John Allen Chau was killed last week by North Sentinel islanders who apparently shot him with arrows and then buried his body on the beach, police say.
But even officials don't travel to North Sentinel, where people live as their ancestors did thousands of years ago, and where outsiders are seen with suspicion and attacked.
"It's a difficult proposition," said Dependera Pathak, director-general of police on India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where North Sentinel is located.
"We have to see what is possible, taking utmost care of the sensitivity of the group and the legal requirements." ..."
Police are consulting anthropologists, tribal welfare experts and scholars to figure out a way to recover the body, he said.
While visits to the island are heavily restricted, Chau paid fishermen last week to take him near North Sentinel, using a kayak to paddle to shore and bringing gifts including a football and fish. ..."
he wrote about his visit and left his notes with the fishermen. He returned to North Sentinel the next day, Nov. 16.
What happened then isn't known, but on the morning of the following day, the fishermen watched from the boat as tribesmen dragged Chau's body along the beach and buried his remains. ..."
Chau was apparently shot and killed by arrows, but the cause of death can't be confirmed until his body is recovered, Pathak said. ..."
"He didn't go there for just adventure. I have no question it was to bring the gospel of Jesus to them," Staver said.
Staver said Chau's last notes to his family on Nov. 16 told them that they might think he was crazy but that he felt it was worth it and asked that they not be angry if he was killed.

He's the crazy man who trespassed and yelled gibberish to them before they killed him. If he was the first step then they've got a lot of steps yet to go.
At least he would have spoken the language.
Never cover for stupidity.
I was thinking Ferguson. But Chiraq, Philly, or StL. Hell, just about any city in America nowadays...
Tupac Schwartz?
There are a lot of stupid people with good hearts who mean well. In his mind, he was trying to help them.
Or a platoon of Marines.
Wikipedia shows 23.04 square miles as the size of the island, and the Indian gov't has estimated the population from about 35 to about 200 individuals. Either way, they're grossly inbred, and mired in illiterate, lawless savagery. But that island is their home, and India's is the only gov't with a claim -- they regard it as an autonomous region. How about this -- everyone just leave them the **** alone?
It is suspected that, while there is an exclusion zone around the island (the natives know nothing about any of that) and the island is off limits to outsiders per the gov't of India (ditto), poachers land on the island from time to time and if confronted, respond with superior modern firepower. These incursions are not monitored, but it is believed that they have helped form the natives' view of and response to peaceful attempts at contact.
It has nothing to do with exposure to disease, or to the ridiculous fiction that they've been isolated for tens of thousands of years (I've seen estimates as high as 60,000, and all of that is rubbish).
“We have to see what is possible, taking utmost care of the sensitivity of the group and the legal requirements.” ...”
I think I see the problem. Believing savages to have rights that supersede societal norms.
How about IQ tests for anyone who wants to trespass there?
Its supposedly a stock photo of the same tribe...
"At a time when human contact and fellowship is said to lengthen the lifespan, there is a tribe in the tiny North Sentinel Island of Andaman and Nicobar in the Indian Ocean that is devoid of modern human contact.
While the world has moved on to technology, these hunters and gatherers have never practised agriculture."

We call them savages and yet they may think the same of us. They have lived this way for thousands upon thousands of years. You think trying to introduce the 21st century and Western Ways is going to somehow transform them into something else more acceptable?
I say leave them alone and let them live as they are.
You missed my point.
I really don’t care if they continue to live as savages or disappear from the face of the earth. But they’re being allowed to get away with murder - literally - BECAUSE they’re savages. I think that’s wrong.
If he was truly trying to spread the word of Christ and I have no reason to doubt thst his place beside God in the afterlife is assured
By what Ive been taught
Folks making fun of his death is what this forum does
I dont find death funny ....not when its been laid out before me
He was a young guy ..idealistic and naive seeking purpose I suppose
Sad Thanksgiving for his family
These primitives cant be protected forever from the outside world which is frankly yet another downside to this story

27 year old John Allen Chau paid seven local fisherman to transport him close to the North Sentinel island off the coast of India to spread the word of the Lord. He then proceeded to get in his own canoe and paddle to the shore, but once he disembarked from his boat he was immediately bombarded with arrows from the Sentinelese tribe.
Chau continued to walk towards the tribe but was then knocked over and a rope was placed around his neck, before his body was dragged along the beach. The next anyone ever saw of him was when the fisherman saw his body hung up on the shore as a warning to anyone else who wanted to try and interfere with their way of life.
Is a beach not a central location on an island?
