Democrats took control of the House by flipping seats in the nations suburbs, which have long been political battlegrounds. But those victories rested on more than just the votes of college-educated white voters, whose shift away from Donald Trump and the Republican Party has drawn wide attention.
People of color were also a large component of the Democrats victories in the suburbsincreasingly diverse communities that no longer fit the stereotype of racial homogeneity. They are more likely to live in the suburbs than in urban areas, and no matter where they live, they tend to vote Democratic.
In the AP VoteCast survey, a large, nationwide poll of people who said they voted in the midterms or intended to, only 46% of self-identified white suburbanites voted for a Democratic candidate, making up about 15% of the share of voters nationwide.
Among white suburban voters, women with college degrees were the only major bloc that backed Democratic candidates more than Republicans. White men with and without bachelors degrees, as well as white women without degrees, voted for Republicans more than for Democrats, the national survey found.
Meanwhile, suburban voters of color, who made up about 11% of the voters in the AP survey, voted for Democrats at a higher rate than college-educated suburban white women, who made up about 8% of voters.
This years election results showed a widening divide among white voters, as those with higher educational attainment increasingly supported Democrats. But to attribute the partys gains in the suburbs solely to that shift overlooks the fact that the majority of suburban, white voters voted Republican, according to the VoteCast survey, while suburban voters of color overwhelmingly backed Democrats.
Any national election survey will miss qualities of individual districts. But mapping vote share with districts key demographics shows similar patterns.

"...too STOOOOOOPID to retain the policies..."
LOL! I agree.
First of all, you are correct. The democrats have sharpened their voter fraud scheme to make the margin of fraud almost too big to overcome.
Second of all, you are wrong in that the Ryan lead House with an assist from John screw you McCain did nothing to advance the issues the suburban voters cared about.
The GOP was too busy fighting Trump.
They still are, Graham and Paul more worried about Saudia Arabia internal politics than supporting our own.
This is absolutely true.
Also, the 40 "Republicans" who left the House did it knowing that half those seats would be lost to KKKrats.
All the CONgresscritters know that there's a 96% retention rate for incumbents.
I submit that the UniPubbies threw the House to the KKKrats.
I submit that the UniPubbies threw the House to the KKKrats.
Ive been saying this all along. The establishment hates Trump, and continues to do everything to stop him.
"...who left the House..."
On the lack of action by the Republicans in” full control of the govt.”, you could also say that the Democrats had the same control and didn’t get anything except Obamacare by a very skinny margin and deceit. Seems to me apart from favorable judicial rulings, bureaucratic rules and executive action, the government doesn’t work too well legislatively.
Yep. That is exactly what happened. We have many new neighborhoods in our town, in the suburbs, that are almost completely Latino. My brother helped his son buy a new house on the edge of town. They had to wait for it to be built. As soon as all the other houses on his street were built and families moved in he realized.....the son was the only white person on the street. How do you think the rest of the street voted?
Historically those Latinos would continue to climb the ladder and eventually end up voting Republican. That appears no longer to happen. Probably because the lamestream propaganda machine belches out 24/365 that Republicans are nothing but hateful racists who can’t abide anyone who isn’t white.
We can laugh at the Dems for their vitriolic hate spew, but bottom line is it appears to work.
This is the 1st election after the Trump tax cuts and boom in employment. Many people have been able to move out of the city to the suburbs. These same people are used to voting blue. Our mission is to get these folks, with new found freedom, to vote red in 2020!
overlooked key to Dem’s wins.....illegal aliens, dead people, recounts with a Dem in charge of elections.
It is the opposite of diversity if they all vote exactly the same. Freakin automatons
Spot on it’s why the democrats can’t wait for the invasion to get here more voters damn the legal part it’s just the vote that counts.
"...it is just the vote that counts..."
"...we can laugh at Dems for their vitriolic hate spew, but bottom line it seems to work..."
Yes they would we don’t know of all the dirty tricks they are getting away with crooks above the law.
