What was his defense? How long was the interrogation before he confessed? I'm not defending the guy; just would like to know these two facts.

Yes apparently the defense claims that the interrogation went a long time, and the only thing offered to the jury was the recorded confession. They say he confessed to it after brutal hours of questions. So, the answer to that is simple: provide the recording of the entire interrogation. At least to show how long it was and how brutal. Shouldnt be a problem.
As far as the DNA evidence, the defense claims that when the dad found her body, that contaminated the crime scene. Thats such a crock it isnt even funny. His DNA woundnt contaminate anything! It certainly wouldnt contaminate with the suspects DNA!
