ep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., beat back a challenge from dark horse candidate, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on Wednesday for the role of House Minority Leader, with Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., nabbing the title of GOP conference chairman.
The California lawmaker took a decisive victory against Jordan, bringing in 159 votes to the Ohio representatives 43 votes. McCarthy was initially elected to the House in 2006 and has served as the House Majority Leader since 2014.
McCarthy "knows what he needs to do," said GOP Whip Steve Scalise, the Louisiana Republican who was gravely wounded in last year's congressional baseball practice shooting and unanimously won the No. 2 spot as minority whip.

Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy.
Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders.
Told ya Jordan had zero chance. Even the head of the House Freedom Caucus was for McCarthy for crying out loud.
Sigh.
from PBS Frontline 2013
..."The self-proclaimed Young Guns began plotting their rise just as many Republicans feared the party was doomed.
But Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy and Paul Ryan, three young House Republicans, had a plan to move the party away from the dusty establishment and into the 21st century.
They fancied themselves the new Reagan revolution, but they represented a conservatism that Ronald Reagan never even attempted, said Jackie Calmes, who covered their rise for The New York Times. And it was an uncompromising conservatism, when in fact, as we remember, Ronald Reagan compromised many times.
They represent the face of a Republican Party that has moved ever-rightward as the base of the party moved South and West.
Oh yeah, just feel the excitement....
Not good at all.
Well, of course. That is part of being in the minority. The House is not like the Senate. In the House, the majority runs the House - they don’t need to consult with the minority. The Repubs did not consult with the Democrats in the House, either.
Pathetic
Boehner, Ryan and now MacCarthy. All wimpy establishent RINOS.
Hysterical. Trying to justify him losing is silly. The members like McCarty better to be minority leader. It is that simple.
Fine, Jordon doesn’t need the minority post, wait two years and run for speaker.
“The members like McCarty better to be minority leader. It is that simple. “
Yeah, because they’re rinos and neverTrumpers. Special interest dead enders who genuflect to our corrupt stasi state. They certainly don’t represent the people.
This is typical of The Stupid Party. McCarthy is an integral part of the leadership that lost the majority. So let’s re-elect him. That will get us back in control.
The House of Representatives is pretty much a useless branch of government at this point no matter which party holds it. The Rats are just much more destructive in their evil methods and the GOPers are drunk thumb suckers.
I’m not so sure about that. I think I’d rather have Ryan than McCarthy. Remember, they made Ry’an Speaker as a compromise to stop McCarthy from getting it.
Oh, they’ve learned plenty. Republicans have a virtually infinite capacity to learn the wrong lesson from any situation.
Because he has no plans to.
How long has Liz been a congresswoman? I had no idea she was even there.
