There are references in some stories to her "partner," but as far as I can see, that person is invisible. Perhaps she is single. Who knows? Anyhow, if there is a significant other in the picture, keep an eye on his/her job. Payoffs to the spouse/partner/kids are common. Not to pick on the Obamas in particular -- just as a recent point of reference -- Michelle tripled her salary from the University of Chicago, for whom she was a public affairs rep, from $100,000 to $300,000 when Barack was elected to the Senate. Chicago justified the raise as warranted due to the high sensitivity and urgency of the projects she handled. This did not, however, preclude Michelle from unlimited time off to campaign when the presidential race began. When Barack was elected and Michelle moved to DC, Chicago abolished the position.

This sort of thing is not uncommon, and it happens on both sides of the aisle. On the Democrat side, a spouse with serious educational and professional chops will be snapped up by a lobbying firm or a prestigious NGO. The spouse might even do serious work for this employer, and some of the spouses are pretty good. But that's not why they got the job.
