Ocasio-Cortez Couldn't Afford a Place in D.C. Now She Now Has a Generous Offer

Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Socialist darling from the Bronx, couldn't afford an apartment in Washington, D.C. until she begins making a salary in Congress.

Because members of Congress are required to live in both Washington, D.C. and their home district, that means Ocasio-Cortez would be spending a pretty penny in two of the most expensive cities, News Channel 5 reported. Rent in D.C. and Ocasio-Cortez's district range between $1,500 and $1,800 a month.

“To live in two major cities at 29 years old, it's not easy for anybody to do until she gets that income that she's waiting for once her job starts,” Steve Gaich, a relator in D.C., told News Channel 5.

Well, now she has nothing to worry about. Celebrity chef José Andrés has offered to let her stay Ocasio-Cortez stay with his family for as long as need be. Andres owns restaurants in Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles; Las Vegas; South Beach, Florida; Frisco, Texas; and Dorado, Puerto Rico.

Did she just publicly solicit a bribe?

Will she report this gift to the IRS?

The problem here...if you ever opened up a complete survey of the 100 Senators and 435 Representatives....you’d be fairly angry over their arrangements for housing. I would bet that a quarter of them have cheap rent deals with lobbyists for condos.

Waiting on the ethics complaint that is sure to follow any move like this. The Democrats have brought similar complaints against several GOP Representatives, calling the ‘subsidy’ a bribe or illegal campaign contribution.

“I can see a reality TV series here.”

Probably be more like a fantasy tv show since it seems that’s where libs reside much of the time.

I wouldn’t mind having a digital government where elected officials have to stay in their home district and CANNOT be in Washington for any extended amount of time.

I think she solicited a "campaign contribution."

Because members of Congress are required to live in both Washington, D.C. and their home district

I don't believe that they are. They can purchase a convertible sofa for their office and taxpayers provide four-star dining facilities and a gym with showers.

No member of congress is required to live in or around Washington DC, but they are required to live in their district. Last I checked, there was a train...

I wonder if she's going to report this as "imputed income." I'm guessing since she is a Democrat she won't. And, since she's a Democrat, I also suspect the IRS won't audit her on it.

Yup - she’s a party communist alright. Does she live with the poor? No. Does she live a frugal lifestyle so the resources of the world can be fairly distributed to the poor? No.

She makes herself elitist and surrounds herself with the riches of the bourgeois all the while suckering the poor into thinking she’s going to give them these riches she, herself, is consuming at a fantastic rate.

$1500 - $1800/month sounds like quite a deal. Looking at the apartment rentals for Capitol Hill, $1800 is the bottom end and probably not far removed from a janitor closet in the basement
