"California Dreaming" was a sleeper, in that it broke slowly, market by market, from the late summer of 1965 into early 1966 as it moved from west to east. Then it broke all at once nationally in early 1966. The sales were great enough that it became the top selling single of 1966.

"Monday Monday" was right behind it in terms of sales. The group was a phenomenon.
