Sloan's tune, "Let Me Be," as recorded by the Turtles, is a simple protest song. In Sloan's album version, it's the plaint of an abused child.
P. F. Sloan: "Let Me Be"
"I Found a Girl" is one of the great self discovery and loss of virginity tunes of the Sixties. It was also the last hit for Jan & Dean. From 1965. That's the Wrecking Crew backing them up.

A Gus Kahn tune from 1931 originally recorded by Ozzie Nelson. Only Cass would have thought of going into the archives of 78 rpm tunes to record this.

Now we're talking!
I never thought much of the 1959 Shirelles' tune as produced by Luther Dixon. These folks elevated it into art.

Harmony and counterpoint were what they had going for them. They had only three years before they flamed out, but what an amazing three years!

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
HARD TO GET: YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY
In his long career in France, Maurice worked both sides of the world of le chanson: le urbane and la comique. This recording from the Fifties is from the comique side, and its adorable.

Correct. Cass went in 1974 (heart attack), John in 2001 (heroin overdose), and Denny in 2004 (cancer).

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
HARD TO GET: YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY
Although Peggys decade was the 1950s, she had a massive hit in 1969 with a sunset song of regret. This is from her album of that year.
Peggy Lee: You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby
Tune in next weekend for more Harry Warren and the Great American Songbook.

Now, that’s funny! LOL!
Guess I’d really better go. I haven’t slept well and we have to get up earlier in the morning for church. It was awfully good to see you tonight, Sis! (((hugs)))

You might be able to find that documentary on your cable company’s on demand function or streaming video at Amazon. It was time well spent.
