THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
GOING PLACES: SAY IT WITH A KISS
Its funny how this utterly forgettable 1938 movie produced some fine hits. This is early, classic Lady Day backed by Harry James, Lester Young, Edgar Sampson, Benny Carter, Herschel Evans, Benny Morton, Teddy Wilson, Al Casey, Walter Page and Papa Jo Jones. This is a great tune from Harry and Johnny Mercer, and a great performance from the Swing Era.
Billie Holiday: Say it with a Kiss

Artie and Benny Goodman were rivals. Benny plays clarinet; I play music, Artie once said, in an exchange that sounds like modern rappers minus the dirty words. Helen Forrest handles vocal duties. Billie Holidays recording was for real afficionados of jazz, while Arties recording was safer for the audience of the day.

Great concert. An early Beethoven piece, two by Schubert, and one by an Italian composer that I’d never heard of. Great fun.

I’m glad it was a good concert. Does the quality there in AZ compare to what you saw in the NW?

It’s different. In Seattle, different musicians are brought in to form their own groups. In Phoenix, different groups are brought in. For example, last night musicians from the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society of New York came in.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
GOING PLACES: SAY IT WITH A KISS
Johnny was later to become one of the great lyricists of the songbook, but back in the late 1930s he was best known as a bandleader. Here he is with a song from his own lyrics performed by his own band. Maxine Sullivan handles vocal duties.

Top notch! The pianist of the group, Orion Wiess, is a friend of mine from my Seattle days. We had a lot of fun.
Schubert's "Trout" Quintet has a finale where Schubert tricks the audience into applauding too soon. I bet the lady sitting next to me that the trick would work. It did. I wish I had put money on it.
After the concert, I spoke with Orion about the various Schubert pieces where he plays that same trick on his audience. Orion is doing one of those pieces, a Sonata for Piano 4-Hands, soon in New York, and I told him that Schubert teases the audience at the end at least three times before he ends the piece with a bang. I wish I could be at that concert.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
SOMETHING TELLS ME
Satchmo was in a class by himself. This is his band from 1938. His vocal style was inelegant but amazingly expressive. What can you say about his horn? The superlatives have all been used.

This is a more relaxed take on the song. Fats was another unique artist and his piano work matchless.
