As word trickled out Tuesday night that Democrats had recaptured the House, likely Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California wasted no time in celebrating the moment.
Tomorrow will be a new day in America, she proclaimed.
But beyond Pelosis soaring rhetoric is a harsh political reality: the power to shape the country no longer rests in the House. Instead, the waning influence of Americas legislature is concentrated in the Senate. And unless Democrats can take back the upper chamber, Tuesdays victory is nothing but political fools gold.
Heres why.
Most Americans know how Washington, D.C. is supposed to work, with the House and Senate drafting compromise legislation to fix the nations troubles while the president signs or vetoes the bills accordingly. But a recent study shows that things arent going as the Founding Fathers had planned. No longer are the House and Senate serving their intended functions of drafting new laws, declaring war, and serving as a check on the presidency.
Instead, the deeply divided legislative branch has delegated its powers to the executive specifically to the president and his many executive orders.
Its a pattern that started with President Barack Obama and has continued under President Donald Trump.
But that heavy-handed governing has led to an unending stream of lawsuits from opposing states and activist groups. That means the federal judiciary has more frequently stepped in to decide the nations future on the most divisive issues like abortion, immigration, and affirmative action.
In effect, we are increasingly governed not by the House and Senate but by partisan judges who rule on partisan lawsuits.
The legislature is impotent, thundered Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., during a recent debate. The legislature is weak.
And yet even as Capitol Hill has weakened itself, the Senate has retained one critical function: confirming those...

President Trump shows them that while they may have won the House, it is a phyric win as he is still president and owns the news cycle. No celebrating lap for them. Besides, holding the Senate is far more important, both as check and to approve Trump’s appointments, treaties, etc.
However, the GOP increasing their numbers in the Senate is a nice consolation gift, that gives them more power to approve judges and Supreme Court picks. I hope they make good use of it.
America doesn’t have 3 branches of government, it probably has 7 or 8, including our central bank, the intelligence services, and a few others.
I've seen various YouTubes of this @hole's arguments and they are convincing. He seems to be right, but of NO use in fixing things.
Sad.
Trump is sitting pretty. House doesn't send Trump the budget he wants, he won't sign it, and it's now the Democrat's fault. Health care? the Dems. Immigration? the Dems....
Thanks to Paul Ryan.
By 2040, Democrats and liberals will live in only 15 of the nations 50 states, netting them 30 senators in the 100 member chamber.
Thats true even if they retain control of the House. Well likely have a gridlocked Congress far into the future with liberal urban majorities dominating the House and rural conservative minorities running the Senate.
A recipe for perpetual political conflict.
> There is no getting around the fact that the Democrats won.
Well, they won the House for 2 years, sure, but in the big picture they lost. The Senate went the other way, and House gains were half the historical norm.
Most Americans don't have an F'ing clue on our government works. If they did, far less DEMs would be elected.
The Dems will dump Nancy.

See my post.
The urban centers will turn Blue, making the House largely Democrat but the opposite trend will in turn deepen GOP control of the Senate.
The big picture here will play out over the next generation.
Yes, this really changes the dynamics for the next two years. Trump’s a negotiator so it should be good. I think the Democrats will come to regret this.
....a recent study shows that things arent going as the Founding Fathers had planned.
No shxt Sherlock(Bryan Dean Wright).
The Founding Fathers never planned on a bunch on idiots writing thousands of laws every year based on frivolous BS, funneling money into their own pockets and destroying this country from within but it’s happening.
“Democrats and liberals will live in only 15 of the nations 50 states”
Don’t know why you think that. There are already states that have turned from red to purple. Even Texas almost voted for a “progressive” senator. AZ and NV and GA seem to moving toward the right end of ROYGIBV. To me, the trend seems to be heading in the opposite direction than what you think.
<...Tomorrow will be a new day in America,...>
...as is every tomorrow.

....stupid b!tch
Democrats will probably win presidential and House elections by default after Trump leaves the scene but they wont get anything done because of a GOP Senate.
As Americas cities turn increasingly Blue, the American countryside and small towns will get even Redder.
Living in Red Colorado, the urban liberal Democrats run my state but my small town will remain GOP far into the future.
My GOP congresscritter was easily re-elected.
States with big population centers are going to turn Blue. Its where most Americans live, stupid.
Most of the country is empty and those are the parts that will remain Red.
If you live on a farm or in small town, youll like stay conservative.
“stupid.”
Hey I didn’t call you names!!! You can’t support your argument, so you resort to name-calling. Pathetic...
