CHARLESTON, W.Va. With a high-profile debate and a presidential visit still ahead, the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Joe Manchin and challenger Patrick Morrisey is tightening up.
The latest version of the MetroNews Dominion Post West Virginia Poll shows Manchin up by 5 percentage points over Morrisey.
The poll shows 45 percent of likely voters favoring Manchin, 40 percent favoring Morrisey, 11 percent for Libertarian Rusty Hollen and 5 percent undecided.
Thats a smaller gap than the last version of the poll in August, which showed Manchin ahead by 8 points. Its also closer than some other national polls have been showing.
And the 5 points is right at the West Virginia Polls margin of error of +/- 4.9 percent.

IIRC an old maxim is any incumbent who is polling lower than 50% is in serious trouble.
The old democrat trick, put up a ringer to split the opposition vote to your candidate by enough to let your guy win.
It’s looking likely.
Traditionally the libertarian vote goes down to 2% or less on election day. Most of those votes will go to Donnelly.
I hope not! Id rather they go to Morrissey.
Donnelly is running in Indiana.
Manchin is the ONLY red state democrat senator who may survive...
Its the race I will be watching next Tuesday. If Manchin goes down, no other Red State Democratic Senator is going hold, period.
Honestly, had the GOP put up someone more capable than Morrisey, I’d say Manchin goes down... but since Morrisey is so, so, so weak and not ready for prime time, Manchin may indeed hold on, because the ONLY thing that is going to take out Manchin with Morrisey as the opponent, is the sheer national momentum for the GOP... And if the momentum is such that Morrisey wins, then the momentum for the GOP is so great that a LOT of very weak R’s are going to win...
Meaning that the House will solidly hold.. and the open seat contests for the nearly 40 GOP candidates will break overhelmingly in their favor.
We get a lot of Manchin TV commercials here in SW Pennsylvania and if those represent the type of politician Manchin is (surely they do; he approved them), then he’s as much of a hate-filled lying cockroach as any Democrat is.
Morrissey is far from the perfect candidate, but Manchin’s faux-moderate pose is highly annoying and I hope he goes down in flames on Tuesday along with Heitkamp, Donnelly, Tester, Clare the Cadaver, Nelson, the dyke from Arizona, etc. Not ONE of them has a single positive thing to run on, and it shows.
Now if only we in PA could get rid of our empty suit Senator with the room temperature IQ, but that’s a very long shot.
I guess he meant Morrissey.
Unfortunately Morrissey is such an uninspiring candidate, Manchin will probably speak thorugh.
Fire Manchin! If he isn’t for us, he is against us. As a Democrat he helps Schumer!
LOL. Good one. I guess you meant squeak through.
yeah sorry - squeak through@
The libertarian is obviously the spoiler.
It would be nice if the Libertarian shows the same class as the one in Montana did.
Montana was interesting yesterday when Libertarian Senatorial candidate withdrew and threw his support to Republican Rosendale. Not sure if that is what we want in WV...
Who supports coal the most?
Manchin has a record as a Friend of Coal. What has he done lately?
Who has the greater pull...... Dow/dupont or the nonunion miners?
I voted for Morrisey yesterday. When these guys get to DC they will vote with the party. That’s what I expect. Manchin votes with the party (Democrats). Not what I want.
Look at the MOE of the poll. This is a push poll to try to help Manchin.
If Trump’s coattails continue from 2016, Morrisey should win. We just don’t know yet if Trump will be able to drag the weak GOP candidates over the line. Trump is certainly putting in the time and effort to make it happen.
