The welfare state is a factor, but not the only factor.
I simply oppose open borders. I care about language and culture and societal norms. I care about sovereignty. I don’t think it’s OK for millions of people to just slip into the US even if they won’t be relying on the welfare state.
Open borders are wrong.
Well said.
Even if they are not receiving benefits paid by the taxpayer, (and anyone here will not be denied them if it is up to federal ,state or local government progressives) they will bring their developing nation social problems with them and there will inevitably be an increase in criminal activity if they aren't being fed, clothed, housed and educated on the taxpayer's dime. The black market issues in Latin America will be our problem, whether we like it or not. they will be making money somehow, legal or otherwise and suddenly the issues with illegal drugs will spike to new highs.
Even if they aren't directly receiving benefits they will put a strain on public education, utilities, highways, public transport, as well as police and fire protection. We will have tent cities and shanty towns all over the country, not just in the Republic of Mexifornia with additional public health risks to US citizens.
A nation without borders will soon no longer be a recognizable nation.
