Devon Brown would have been just another statistic - one of the 486,900 black inmates in US state and federal prisons by the end of 2016.
But an academic year in Kenya during his seventh grade changed his life forever.
"Honestly it turned me into the man I am today. From a boy with limited options in inner-city Baltimore to a man who has now run an ice-cream company with revenues of $400,000 (£310,000) as its CEO," he reflects. Mr Brown's childhood had all the ingredients for failure.
Born on 9 January 1990 in East Baltimore, his late mother was addicted to heroin and cocaine while his father drank too much.
Outside their house, the harsh streets of Baltimore only compounded the situation as drug dealers, addicts, broken families and a crowded school system offered little hope for a better future.

Our schools used to be like that one in Kenya.
Then the Progressives and the federal and state governments took them over.
Often times, some time in 3rd world country to really see how others live is the kick in the ass some young people need.
Excellent story. My heart breaks for these young innocents born into broken or drug infested homes. What chance do they have? They deserve our compassion, not our censure.
“Black Culture” as observed in this country is toxic and poisonous.
There is no reason that makes any black person incapable of success in this country, but the “Black Culture” that many are funneled into observing (the culture that glorifies violence, drugs, misogyny and racism and at the same time ridicules education) is the most severe self-imposed impediment there is.
Sending this young man to Kenya and removing him from that “Black Culture” is what gave him the freedom and opportunity to achieve his potential.
Both a wonderful story in its success, and terrible in its illustration of the encapsulating poison acting on those left behind in Leftist hell-holes like East Baltimore.
My neighbor’s husband taught in an inner city Boston school.
A young teacher arrived from Nigeria-—moved his wife and 2 young children here.
After teaching in this school for three months-—he quit,said he couldn’t take it anymore-—the so-called American”Black Culture”. The school was a zoo.
He moved his entire family back to Nigeria.

I find that indescribably sad.
Until Black America jettisons that culture, it is going to be an uphill, and probably unattainable fight to succeed.
Think about how great this country could be if we could harness the power of many of those black Americans, who instead of contributing to the wealth of this country, are instead drawing on the nearly half a billion dollars in welfare this country is taking from taxpayers each year and giving to non-productive citizens.
What a shame.
It is sad——and they lost a damned good teacher.

Check your math. Half a billion in welfare would be less than $100 each.

This was roughly 15 years ago. He told me that annual tuition, board and room was roughly U.S. $800 at that time. Air fare was, of course, additional. Even then, we are talking around $2500 per student per year.
Your average per pupil expenditure at our very crappy public schools are roughly three times that, if not more and doesn't include room and board. For the difference in product which you get, we would be way better off financially closing down crappy districts like East Baltimore and sending the kids en masse to various countries in Africa offering these programs.
And at the end of those four years, you would get well-rounded kids with a good, classical education rather than your next generation of street thugs.
Obviously not an Obama Kenyan school, since this man is now a success.

Actually, you can even say time in other "first world" countries is a real kick in the ass. My first visit to Europe was pretty shocking to me as a young person. I just assumed everyone lived like we did. At, least, certainly the Europeans.
Many years ago, I spent some time working and living in Asia. I saw how hard many people worked and studied to survive. I saw that most people there simply wanted to be AMERICANS. It really changed how I viewed this country.
His family is from the muslim Luo tribe. Most of the productive, friendly and hard-working Christian people of Kenya who I've met in America are of the Kikuyu tribe.
