The Slaughter in Pittsburgh
Commentary ^ | 27 Oct 218 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 10/27/2018 6:37:59 PM PDT by Rummyfan

The synagogue in Pittsburgh is called the Tree of Life. The name is a translation into English of the Hebrew phrase etz chaim. We sing those words as the Torah is put away on every Shabbat. They are words from the Book of Proverbs: “She is a tree of life for those that cling to her and all who do are happy.” The “she” in that sentence is “wisdom,” and the verse that precedes it is especially poignant in light of what has happened: “Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.” Today the paths of peace were befouled by a monstrous anti-Semite who stormed the Tree of Life shouting something about Jews needing to die as he murdered and injured and then shot at some cops for good measure.

In every generation they rise up against us to destroy us. In a classic act of anti-Semitic violence, which is what this is, Jews hear the echoes of every violent anti-Semitic act that has preceded it in history. And we hear those echoes because they are there. That which motivates Jew-hatred today is what has motivated it from time immemorial—the poisonously attractive idea that Jews need to be extirpated because our existence is an offense or a threat to an existing larger order. The blessing of Jewish life in America is that this notion has largely been consigned to the dregs from which today’s human malignancy rose. Despite the fact that most hate crimes in America are aimed at Jews, the actual number is vanishingly small—especially compared to France, from which Jews are now fleeing, and England, whose Labour Party is in the hands of an actual Jew-hater.

A shameful, hateful homicidal act by a shameful, hateful, homicidal individual. He should be duly indicted, tried, convicted, and executed.

Federal or state charges is the ?

If our current weak on the death penalty Democrat Tom Wolf is re-elected PA governor I don’t see a state sentence of death being carried out, but the guy running against him Scott Wagner for the Republicans would support carrying out the sentence.

We last ate from the tree of good and evil. We will only regain access to the tree of life when and if we come into the presence of the “Living One”.

Trying to calm the storm would only gain Trump and the nation a defeat and a far worse storm.

So Podhoretz doesn’t blame the president for the actual synagogues attack, but goes to say the president is a bad man who isn’t doing enough to calm divisions in the country. This trash is what you post here? Disgusting.

“[Trump’s] just not a good person...”

A vain, useless essay that was written just so he could insert that phrase.

Trying to connect Trump to something that is as old as history is contemptible.

There is nothing new that can be written about such events and this never-Trumper is trying to pose as if he is breaking new ground.

As a Jew (and a long-time Freeper), who is grieving today for my people, I would respectfully ask any of you who have political thoughts about this terrible crime to post them on another thread (there are many). Eleven Jews, who came to pray this morning to embrace the Torah, the "tree of life" (etz chayim), instead in a bitter irony met their untimely deaths. May the Almighty bind up their souls in the bond of eternal life, and may the Author of Peace send peace to all who mourn.

I have spent most of my life trying to understand why. Where did this come from? Why does it lurk in the hearts of people? It makes no sense.

the left thinks that if you don’t believe in their cult you’re being divisive.

Look how they have committed violence shootings, physical attacks, and harrasment in the last few years. Add that to the fact their billionaire buddies in big tech have tried to silence all voices that are not far left.

We’re being attacked nonstop, but fighting back/pushing back is considered divisive.

WTF do they think the lying coordinated attack on Kavanaugh was anyway? Was that being cordial and showing you’re remotely sane enough to extend an olive branch? Hell no.
These people need to be defeated and thrown in the dustbin of history.
Dangerous lunatics.

Worship? Maybe you should not be on FR.

You want to come at POTUS with legit criticism, fine. Don’t come here supporting attacks that try to tie him to something like this.

As senseless and horrific as today’s Pittsburgh mass murder was, I fear that a much broader and ominous threat lies ahead -— the creation of a pervasive surveillance state. Over and over, I heard that while the killer had no police record, there was plenty of evidence on social media sites to anticipate or predict this lethal event, as if to suggest that intensified monitoring of these sites would guarantee improved public safety and protection.

There’s a large segment of American citizens who firmly believe that it’s the government’s responsibility to protect us from ourselves, and are more than willing to cede personal freedoms and free speech to achieve that end. In other words, to authorize anonymous third-party government monitors to use algorithms developed by unelected, politically motivated bureaucrats to pre-determine who among us represents a threat to society. The term for this is “Pre-Crime.”

Looking forward, what may now be viewed as a good idea could easily be abused by future leaders with more sinister motives in mind. If our stated opinions, attitudes and beliefs expressed on social media can land us on a government threat or enemies list, then we’re just one step away from totalitarian control and extra-judicial roundups. Entrusting anyone, especially government, with this kind of power won’t guarantee either safety or protection, but rather the likely absence of both. Be very careful what you wish for.

She needs to be, that’s for sure. I guess as soon as Hilary is indicted huh?

I just get sick of these smug leftest screaming about divisiveness, and “POTUS should tone it down” when they have been nonstop psycho for years, and are provided cover by the media and even CELEBRATED for it.
